Toyota, Lexus air bag sensor recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota recalled approximately 1 million model year 2020-2022 Toyota and Lexus vehicles.
  • Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the recalled vehicles were equipped with defective front passenger seat sensors that could prevent the air bag from deploying as designed.
  • Where: The recall affects Toyota and Lexus vehicle owners nationwide.

Toyota has initiated a recall of approximately 1 million model year 2020-2022 Toyota and Lexus vehicles over concerns that a defect with their front passenger seat sensors may cause their air bag to not deploy properly.

The automaker is concerned that sensors in the front passenger seats of the recalled vehicles may have been improperly manufactured, causing a short circuit that would prevent the air bag system from correctly identifying a passenger’s weight.

This would not allow the airbag system to properly classify the occupant’s weight, and the airbag may not deploy as designed in certain crashes, increasing the risk of injury,” the Toyota recall states

The recall involves certain model year 2020-2021 Toyota Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles; 2020-2022 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid vehicles; 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid vehicles; model year 2021 Lexus ES250 vehicles; 2020-2021 Lexus ES350, RX350 and RX450h vehicles; and 2020-2022 Lexus ES300H vehicles.

Toyota plans to notify affected Toyota, Lexus vehicle owners by the middle of February 2024

Toyota plans to remedy the issue by having Toyota and Lexus dealers inspect the sensors on the recalled vehicles and, if necessary, replace them at no cost to vehicle owners, according to the Toyota recall.

The automaker said it plans to notify affected vehicle Toyota and Lexus vehicle owners by the middle of February 2024. Individuals with more questions about the recall can contact Toyota by phone at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus by phone at 1-800-255-3987.

Toyota agreed earlier this year to a $78.5 million class action settlement made to resolve claims it equipped vehicles with defective air bag control units that could malfunction during an accident.

I have a 2017 Lexus NX I purchased in 7/2023 and in 11/23, the car malfunctioned and I wasn’t able to stop the vehicle going less than 5 miles an hour pulling in a space at a gas station and the vehicle lights came on after impact saying “parking assist malfunction “ caused thousands of dollars worth of damage and Lexus did nothing about it, basically dismissed it as driver fault, the window just stopped working, there is definitely an electrical issue with this car and sometimes I’m still afraid to drive it thinking it may just randomly do that again and I may be driving on a highway and can’t stop, I reported it to the highway safety control and saw other articles where this lexus models malfunctioned and there was no issue with the brakes but the vehicle accelerated and wouldn’t stop
