Mazda initiates recall for pickups due to incorrectly installed air bags

• Why: The frontal passenger air bag inflator may have been installed in the incorrect position during a previous Takata recall repair.

Mazda is recalling 12,741 of its 2004-2006 MAZDA B-Series pickup trucks due to front passenger side air bag inflators being installed incorrectly in a previous recall.

The affected Mazda recall VIN ranges are 4F4YR16U44TM00003 to 4F4YR16DX4TM13015, F4ZR16U04TM00472 to 4F4ZR47E84TM13057, 4F4YR46U35PM00005 to 4F4YR16EX5PM07850, 4F4ZR47E45PM00011 to 4F4ZR16U85PM07843, 4F4YR46U36PM00006 to 4F4YR16D26PM06247 and 4F4ZR47E76PM00005 to 4F4ZR16U36PM06245.

The air bag inflator may have been installed in the incorrect orientation during the previous Takata recall repair, the recall notice says.

The Mazda pickups recall issues could lead to issues with the deployment of the air bag, which increased the risk of injury, the recall says. The recall repair instructions may not have been followed properly, Mazda says, causing the inflator to be installed incorrectly.

Mazda air bag recall letters will be sent to owners by Jan. 12

Mazda did not say if it has received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Dealers were notified of the recall by Dec. 15 and recall letters will be sent to vehicle owners by Jan. 12. Mazda North American Operations can be reached at 800-222-5500.

Mazda recalled more than 227,000 Mazda3 and CX-3 vehicles in July, as the rearview camera may have a defect that may cause the image to not display properly, instead showing a flickering or distorted image.
