Insight Pharmaceuticals is recalling one lot of its Americaine 20% Benzocaine Topical Anesthetic Spray after benzene was found in third-party testing of the product.
The benzene was not part of the solution, but came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can, the Americaine recall says.
The product comes in white aerosol cans with teal caps with lot codes located on the bottom of the can. The benzene recall lot codes are 1A16420 with a National Drug Code of 63736-378-02 and an expiration date of 01/25 in a 2-ounce package.
The spray was distributed nationwide in the United States through a limited number of retailers and online, the Americaine recall says.
Benzene is a carcinogen that can get into the body through inhalation, orally and through the skin and can lead to cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life threatening, the recall says.
Insight offering reimbursement for consumers providing photo of can
Insight says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Insight is offering reimbursement for consumers who have purchased the spray. Insight can be reached at medicalaffairs@prestigebrands.com or through its website or by phone between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. ET at 800-344-7239. Consumers will be asked to provide a photo of the bottom of the can showing the lot code.
The manufacturers of Lotrimin and Tinactin brand antifungal spray products failed to disclose that they allegedly contain dangerously high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene, a September class action lawsuit alleged.
