Sugar Foods is recalling certain lots of Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons due to potential Salmonella contamination. The recall affects products distributed to Kroger stores in 17 states, including Alabama, Georgia and Texas.
The recall was announced on May 15 and subsequently published by the FDA on May 18.
The Kroger recall specifically targets 5 oz pouches of the croutons with UPC 0 11110 81353 4 and various “Best If Used By” dates ranging from Feb. 17, 2027, to April 7, 2027.
The contamination risk stems from milk powder supplied by California Dairies Inc., which was used in the seasoning blend applied to the croutons by Sugar Foods. Despite the affected seasoning batches testing negative for Salmonella before use, the recall is a precautionary measure following a supplier-initiated recall by California Dairies.
“This action follows a third-party supplier-initiated recall by California Dairies due to concerns regarding potential Salmonella contamination in milk powder,” the Kroger recall states.
No illnesses reported so far related to recalled Kroger Homestyle Croutons
Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled croutons, Sugar Foods is taking this step out of an abundance of caution.
“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the Kroger recall notice says.
Salmonella is known to cause severe health issues, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as young children and the elderly.
Sugar Foods is actively working to address the issue by recalling the affected lots and coordinating with the FDA to ensure consumer safety.
Consumers can reach Sugar Foods at 332-240-6676 for any questions or concerns regarding the recall. The line is available 24/7 to assist customers with inquiries.
