Meat Products Wheat Seasoning Recall Overview:
- Who: At least seven brands are recalling meat products that contain a seasoning that may contain undeclared wheat.
- Why: The seasoning mixes that flavor the meat products may contain wheat products that are undeclared on the packaging.
- Where: Some of the products were distributed nationwide.
Ready-to-eat meat sticks produced by seven different brands are being recalled by food safety authorities due to fears they may contain undisclosed wheat.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert Mar. 1 for various meat products containing a seasoning mix that has been recalled by the producer.
The producer, PS Seasoning of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, recalled the seasoning due to concerns that it may contain undeclared wheat.
The problem was discovered when the meat product brands received notification from their seasoning supplier that the seasoning mix, which is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), may contain undeclared wheat.
“FSIS is issuing this public health alert to ensure that consumers are aware that these products should not be consumed,” the service said. “This situation is currently evolving, which means additional products may be added.”
Consumers Urged Not to Consume Recalled Meat Sticks
FSIS and FDA are coordinating on the issue and its associated recall.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products so far but anyone concerned about illness should contact their health care provider.
“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the FSIS said. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
The full list of products subject to the public health alert are available here but include certain meat sticks produced by brands Wyoming Authentic, The Durand Smokehouse, LeRoy Meats, Trigs Smokehouse and Main Street Meat Company.
The products are from various establishments and bear establishment number “EST. 44972,” “EST. 46312,” “EST. 44869,” “EST. 47243,” “EST. 46777” or “EST. 51257” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The retail products from “EST. M-47484” do not bear a USDA mark of inspection.
Some of the products were distributed nationwide.
The news comes as more than 80 types of ready-to-eat jerky produced by California company Boyd Specialties, LLC are being recalled across eight states due to possible listeria contamination.
Meanwhile, almost three tons of teriyaki beef sticks are also being recalled nationwide as they falsely declare on their packaging that they are “gluten-free.”
