Calise & Sons Bakery, Inc. has recalled 689 packages of its Italian Scala Bread after it was accidentally packaged in a bag that said it was Golden Flax Seed Scala.

The packages were distributed in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Hampshire, and Connecticut, according to the recall notice.

When it learned of the packaging error, Calise says it immediately contacted its sales team and distributors to begin a voluntary recall. The packages that had not yet been distributed were pulled off the company’s trucks.

“Our sales reps have been returning to the stores to retrieve the product. At this moment, we have approximately 100 packages that are unaccounted for,” the company states. “We are working diligently to retrieve all products.”

Consumers and Retailers Should Discard the Affected Bread

The packages have a white plastic clip closure with a sell by date of Dec. 6, Julian date of 327 and UPC of 0 7519902816 6.

The company is urging retailers with the bread to record the number of packages and then throw those packages away. Credit for the discarded packages will be given out with the retailers’ next deliveries. It is also asking consumers to discard any packages they may have at home.

“If anyone with a known allergy to sesame seeds has consumed any of the product referenced here, we recommend that you consult with your physician immediately,” the company says. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

In August, Hostess Brands had to recall several lots of its Hostess Soft White Hamburger Buns and Soft White Hot Dog Buns due the breads being possibly tainted with listeria or salmonella — two contaminants that can cause serious health problems, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

Meanwhile, this week, Alburj brand Halawa Pistachio Extra products and a number of white sesame seed products were recalled in Canada due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said it was currently conducting a food safety investigation amid the positive tests and is in the process of verifying that the affected products are being removed from shelves.
