More than 80 types of ready-to-eat jerky produced by California company Boyd Specialties, LLC are being recalled across eight states due to possible listeria contamination.

According to a recall notice, the recalled jerky includes multiple types of Garlic Pepper, Straight Whiskey, Carne Asada, Mango Habanero, Carolina Reaper, Cracked Black Pepper, Old Fashioned Maple Flavor and other flavored jerky products sold under numerous brand names, including Ranchview Jerky Co., Texas Family Jerky, The Village Sweet Shoppe, Humboldt Jerky Co., Smokehouse Jerky Co., and others.

These recalled products were shipped to retail locations in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas.

According to the recall notice posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the jerky products were produced on Feb. 23, 2022. The products subject to the recall can be found here, and the labels can be found here. All of the recalled products have the establishment number “EST. 40269” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Listeria Can Cause Fatal Infection, Miscarriage

So far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, FSIS says. However, the agency says anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

The issue was discovered by FSIS when a sample product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Eating food contaminated with listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women and their newborns. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract, and, in pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.

FSIS says it is concerned that some of the recalled jerky may be in consumers’ pantries, and it is urging consumers to throw away or return recalled products to the place of purchase.

Recently, another ready-to-eat meat product — teriyaki beef sticks — were recalled, as they falsely declare on their packaging that they are “gluten-free.” Frickenschmidt Foods LLC said it was recalling approximately 5,795 pounds of ready-to-eat beef stick products due to misbranding.

Meanwhile, Interstate Meat Dist. Inc. had to recall 28,356 pounds of its ground beef products in February due to fears that the meat could be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the most common E. coli strain to cause severe illness in humans.
