Costco Kettle Classic Clam Chowder With Uncured Bacon Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ivar’s Soup and Sauce Company has issued a recall.
  • Why: Almost 15,000 sleeves of its Kettle Classic Clam Chowder With Uncured Bacon are being recalled as they may contain sharp pieces of plastic.
  • Where: The soup was sold in Costcos across 13 states.

Almost 15,000 sleeves of clam chowder sold in Costcos across multiple states are being recalled due to the potential presence of hard, sharp plastic pieces.

Ivar’s Soup and Sauce Company issued the recall of 14,968 sleeves of refrigerated Kettle Classic Clam Chowder With Uncured Bacon  Oct. 19 through the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

The company said it is possible that the soups contain “hard, sharp opaque plastic pieces,” and consumers “are urged not to eat the product,” the recall says.

The problem was discovered on Oct. 17 when a customer found a piece of plastic in the container they purchased and notified Ivar’s, the recall says. The piece of plastic is in the shape of a half circle, with some of the center missing, and the edges are sharp and pointed.

The diameter of the circle is approximately one and a half inches, the recall says, and it is possible that the remainder of the circular plastic is a similarly intact piece or in numerous smaller pieces within the soup. No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

The soup was distributed to Costcos in the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The soups have a Use By Date of 12-22-2021 printed on the bottom of the sleeve, and on the edge of the individual cup lids.

“The product should be removed from store shelves if present,” the recall says. “Product remaining in the refrigerators of consumers containing the Use By Date of 12-22-2021 should be thrown away or returned to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.”

The news comes just days after more than 14,000 pounds of Butterball turkey ground turkey products sold nationwide were recalled due to possible plastic contamination.
