Bed Rails Recall Overview:

  • Who: Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare is recalling 496,100 of its bed rails.
  • Why: The recall comes after two elderly users were trapped between the rails and their mattresses and died from asphyxiation.
  • Where: The U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare is recalling 496,100 of its bed rails after two elderly users were trapped between the rails and their mattresses and died from asphyxiation.

The majority of the Bed Assist Handles and Bed Assist Rails are being recalled from the United States, but 68,000 are being recalled in Canada and 119 in Mexico.

In a recall notice posted to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare says it is recalling four different models of its adult portable bed rails, due to the risks of entrapment and death by asphyxiation.

The company has received two reports of entrapment deaths associated with two of its Bed Assist Handle bed rails (models 15064 and RTL15073), which occurred in February 2011 and February 2015.

The first case involved a 93-year-old woman at her home in California, and the second involved a 92-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Canada. In both incidents, the bed rails were not securely attached to the bed and the users became entrapped between the product and their mattress, the recall notice says.

Recalled Rails and Handles Were Sold on Amazon and Walmart and in Medical Supply Stores

The models being recalled are:

  • Bed Assist Handle, model 15064, sold on Amazon as Home Bed Assist Handle
  • Bed Assist Rail with Folding Board, model 15062, sold on Amazon as Home Bed Assist Grab Rail with Bed Board
  • Home Bed Assist Handle, model RTL15073, sold on Amazon as Home Bed Assist Handle
  • Home Bed Assist Handle, model RTL15063-ADJ, sold on Amazon as Adjustable Height Home Bed Assist Handle

The rails are made of steel tubing either in white or chrome and have the name “Drive” and model number printed on a label located on the product’s metal tubing. Models RTL15063-ADJ and RTL15073 include black non-slip padding on the grip handle and under-bed frame. Model 15062 features a wooden under-bed board attached to the grip handle.

Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare sold about 496,100 of the bed rails at medical supply stores nationwide and online through Amazon and Walmart between October 2007 through December 2021 for between $30 and $80.

The company is urging consumers to immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare to receive a full refund.
