Metal Fragment Contamination Recall Overview:

  • Who: A number of companies have issued recalls for food products in recent weeks due to the possibility of metal fragment contamination.
  • Why: The contamination is reportedly occurring during the product manufacturing process.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

A number of food and beverage product recalls have been announced in recent weeks due to contamination from metal fragments that is reportedly occurring during the manufacturing process.

The metal fragment contamination has affected products such as blueberries, cupcakes, and Kool-Aid, among others.

Back in September, California-based Driscoll’s Inc. announced a recall of blueberries from a grower in Peru for the potential presence of small metallic spheres. The recall was initiated by the FDA in the United States on Sept. 16. Canadian authorities were also notified two days later that some products sold in that country were affected by the recall.

Flower Foods announced a recall for some of its Tastykake Krimpets on Oct. 31 after discovering that fragments of metal mesh wire had gotten mixed in with the cupcakes, according to the FDA.

The company — which had not received any reports of injuries or issues with the cupcakes as of early November — became aware of the potential contamination after being alerted by a third-party vendor.

Boxes of the Tastykake cupcake products, which include Chocolate, Creme-Filled Chocolate, and Buttercream Iced Creme-Filled Chocolate, were shipped to retailers in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C.

The metal fragment contamination issue has also affected beverage products, with Costco issuing a recall on Nov. 12 for Kool-Aid Tropical Punch mix sold at certain Costco Business Centers and warehouse locations in Los Angeles and the Northwest.

Costco said the recall was due to the “potential presence of foreign material, specifically very small pieces of metal or glass.” The company is asking consumers to return the Kool-Aid product to the store in order to receive a full refund.

Costco also published a recall for several frozen desserts sold at its locations, including its Clio Snacks brand Mixed Berry & Peach Less Sugar, Vanilla & Strawberry Minis, and Vanilla & Strawberry frozen yogurt bars.

Clio Snacks says that the products may have been contaminated with small pieces of metal fragments due to an issue with a since-fixed production machine. While no injuries have been reported, according to Clio Snacks, it is advising consumers to toss out the products.

“Food safety and quality is of the utmost importance to us. Our team remains in close communications with the FDA and has taken proactive measures in remedying this situation,” Clio Snacks said. “We are working with our trusted retail partners to implement the recall and remove the affected lots from shelf.”

Kroger also issued a recall this month for its Country Oven baked goods after it discovered a possible metal fragment contamination, according to the FDA

The company says that metal fragments may have gotten into starch that is used to manufacture the Country Oven baked goods, including cinnamon rolls, white cake, chocolate cake, cheese pockets, and bowtie danish, among others.

The affected products were shipped to 29 states spanning the length of the country, according to Kroger.

Other recalls made in recent days include Euro Foods salami sticks that were sold at Trader Joes and recalled due to possible salmonella contamination

Euro Foods recalled nearly 120,000 pounds of its Citterio Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks after some samples tested positive for salmonella and were linked to health cases in the country
