Corfu Foods, Inc. Fish Recall Overview:

  • Who: Corfu Foods, Inc. is recalling approximately 6,570 pounds of swai fish filets that were imported to the United States.
  • Why: The fish was not approved by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service as it crossed the U.S. border from Vietnam.
  • Where: The recall is effective in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Fish lovers, check that filet before you throw it in the fry pan — more than 6,000 pounds of fish is being recalled from multiple states.

The recall isn’t the result of contamination or mislabeling, however, but of the fish not being approved by the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) as it crossed the U.S. border from Vietnam.

In a recall notice posted by the FSIS, importer Corfu Foods, Inc. says it is recalling approximately 6,570 pounds of swai (Siluriformes) fish products because of the missed inspection, adding that the filets were shipped to institutions, restaurants and retail locations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The frozen swai fish filets came in 15-lb. bulk corrugated box packages that contained various sizes of “PACIFIC DYNASTY SWAI FILLETS.” The boxes were imported on Jan. 15, 2022, and have a use-by date of July 14, 2023. The lot code is VN 461 VI 354.

FSIS says consumers may have purchased the swai filets in bulk or hand-wrapped from the fish counter at retailers, and it is urging consumers who have purchased the fish filets not to consume them.

“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the recall notice says.

No Reports of Adverse Reactions Due To Fish

Luckily, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the fish filets, but FSIS says anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a health care provider.

FSIS is also concerned that some of the filets may be in institutional or restaurant refrigerators or freezers, and it is asking restaurants and institutions to check, and not to serve the products if they are discovered.

The FSIS is responsible for assuring that all meat, poultry and processed egg products that are imported to the United States are “safe, wholesome, unadulterated and properly labeled and packaged.”

In September last year, SAS Foods Enterprises Inc. had to recall approximately 3,768 pounds of its frozen chicken and beef empanada products after it was discovered they were made without federal inspection and packaged with a false USDA inspection label.

FSIS said in a recall notice that it had received an anonymous tip about the false labels and began an investigation.

My family and I have been eating Swaii fish for years . It was affordable for the amount you get to feed a family . Honestly, I enjoyed it didn’t have the wild taste. I’m deeply offended tho to know it never passed guidelines and I have been feeding this to not only myself but family and friends for years. Pls add me to this . I have enough health issues of my own to not add additional from food that I thought I could trust. I’m saddened to know products make it in the store without proper test and approval. What can we trust now ? Pls add me
