Rao’s soup recall overview:

  • Who: Sovos Brands recalled jars of Rao’s Made for Home Slow Simmered Soup, Chicken & Gnocchi.
  • Why: The affected jars may contain undeclared egg.
  • Where: The Rao’s soup recall is active in the United States.

Sovos Brands has issued a recall on jars of Rao’s Made for Home Slow Simmered Soup, Chicken & Gnocchi, as some of the jars of soup may contain undeclared egg.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall Jan. 28. It applies to a limited number of 16-ounce jars of the soup.

According to the recall, the affected soup is labeled as “chicken & gnocchi” but will contain vegetable minestrone, which is dark red and contains egg.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product,” the Rao’s recall states. “Consumers who have purchased jars of the recalled product are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Rao’s soup accidentally mislabeled, recall states

Rao’s initiated the soup recall after it discovered that the vegetable minestrone containing egg was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of egg because it was mistakenly labeled as “chicken & gnocchi”, the company says.

The company distributed the recalled jars in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin in retail stores between Dec. 8, 2022, and Jan. 27, 2023.

The product is packaged in a 16-ounce, clear-glass jar marked with the following code date printed on the top of the jar: Best By NOV 15 2024 EST 251 Code Date 2320 MDV 046030Z009, UPC 747479400015.

No illnesses or complaints have been reported to date, the company says. Rao’s is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

This is not the only mispackaged product to be recalled. Last year, more than 1.1 tons of Skyline Chili were recalled as the contents of the cans may have contained cream of chicken soup.
