Positec has initiated a recall of more than 36,000 utility knives sold at Target as they pose a laceration hazard.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website published the recall May 11. It applies to about 36,250 Positec Blue Ridge utility knives with a six-inch retractable blade.
According to the recall, the utility knife can become unlocked and the blade can protrude while in the original packaging, posing a laceration hazard.
“The firm has received two reports of the blade protruding in the original packaging, both resulting in laceration injuries,” the Positec knife recall states.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Carefully inspect packaging, Positec recall states
Target stores nationwide and online sold the knives exclusively from August 2022 through February 2023 for about $5.
The knives include Model No. BR922OU printed on the back of the package. The knife is silver in color with the Blue Ridge logo. The packaging is blue and teal with an orange-and-white mountain logo at the top.
Consumers should immediately and carefully inspect the packaging containing the Blue Ridge Utility Knife to determine whether the blade tip protrudes through the package, the recall states.
“Carefully remove the knife from the packaging, avoiding the blade tip, and discard the packaging,” the Positec recall says. “To apply the repair, secure the knife by retracting and locking the knife in the closed position. Once the knife is removed from the packaging, the knife can be used in typical fashion.”
Last year, Norwex recalled more than 42,000 ceramic knives in the United States and Canada, as they can break during use, potentially causing lacerations.
