Panera corn chowder recall overview:

  • Who: More than 2,500 cases of Panera at Home Southwest Corn Chowder are being recalled.
  • Why: The chowder contains an undeclared wheat allergen.
  • Where: The product was distributed in 12 states.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of more than 2,500 cases of Panera at Home Southwest Corn Chowder due to an undeclared wheat allergen.

The FDA posted the recall notice to its website June 24, saying Blount Fine Foods voluntarily recalled 2,569 cases of 16-ounce Panera at Home Southwest Corn Chowder.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume this product,” the recall notice says.

The recall includes one SKU of 16-ounce Panera at Home Southwest Corn Chowder cups produced with lot number 042122-2K and “use-by” date of June 30, 2022. Consumers can find the lot number and use-by date on the bottom of each package.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Panera recall says chowder distributed across 12 states

The Panera at Home Southwest Corn Chowder was distributed across 12 states: California, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

It is sold in refrigerated cases in the deli department of select retail grocery stores and is not sold at any Panera bakery-cafe.

No consumer complaints or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall as the product issue was discovered at a grocery store during the restocking process, the Panera recall states.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled chowder are urged to return it to the place of purchase or visit www.blountfinefoods.com/recall.

Panera has previously faced other legal action.

In 2021, Panera faced a class action lawsuit alleging it advertises a low-cost, flat delivery fee of $6 but then secretly increases the prices of food for delivery customers.
