Nissan Pathfinder, Ford F-150 Lightning Truck recall overview:

  • Who: Nissan and Ford recalled certain vehicle models.
  • Why: Nissan recalled 2013-2016 Pathfinder vehicles over a hood latch issue, and Ford recalled F-150 Lightning trucks because of a software issue.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

Nissan and Ford both issued a recall for certain vehicles this month, with Nissan recalling certain Pathfinder vehicles and Ford recalling certain F-150 Lightning trucks.

Nissan recalls 2013-2016 Pathfinders due to hood latch malfunction

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website posted the Nissan recall June 13. It applies to certain 2013-2016 Pathfinders.

According to the notice, on certain Pathfinder vehicles, the secondary hood latch may malfunction and remain in the unlatched, unsecured position when the hood is closed.

“An unsecured hood could unexpectedly open while driving, obstructing the driver’s view, and increasing the risk of a crash,” the Nissan recall notice says.

Additionally, dust and dirt may accumulate on and around the bell crank lever pivot joint. Over time, the buildup, combined with a lack of proper inspection and maintenance of the bell crank assembly, can create mechanical binding that could cause the lever to remain in the open position after it has been disengaged, the recall notice explains.

The Nissan recall affects about 322,671 vehicles, and the remedy is still in development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 18, the company says.

Ford recall over software issue affects F-150 Lightning trucks

Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. recalled about 2,900 F-150 Lightning trucks because a software issue may result in a failure to provide adequate warning of low tire pressure, Yahoo News reports.

The recall is the first for the Ford electric pickup truck.

Ford says the trucks’ tire pressure monitoring system light may not illuminate when intended and may not be able to provide adequate warning of low tire inflation pressure.

This happens because the recommended tire cold inflation pressure value was incorrectly set to 35 psi rather than the correct inflation pressure of 42 psi.

Ford says low tire inflation pressure may lead to poor vehicle handling and a possible loss of vehicle control, which could increase the risk of a crash.

The Ford recall applies to 2,666 U.S. vehicles and 220 in Canada. There are no accidents or injuries connected to the recall so far.

Dealers will update the Body Control Module software for undelivered vehicles and customers who want the remedy immediately, a fix that takes approximately 20 minutes, according to Ford.

Ford will also have the software update available through an over-the-air update in 30 days for all current customers.

The companies are not currently facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

In 2018, Nissan faced a class action lawsuit alleging that 2002 through 2006 Altimas contained a defect that left passengers’ feet wet and, more critically, allowed the cars to rust out.

In March, Ford Motor Co. issued recalls for more than 737,000 vehicles with about half risking fiery oil leaks and the other half suffering from dodgy trailer brakes.
