FCA Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango recall overview:
- Who: FCA issued a recall for just over 270,000 of its model year 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles.
- Why: The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles contain faulty hydraulic control unit/anti-lock brake system modules that can cause them to start and shift out of park on their own.
- Where: The recall is nationwide.
FCA recalled around 270,000 of its model year 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles over concerns they can start and shift out of park on their own.
The automaker initiated the recall after it discovered the Jeep and Dodge vehicles were built with defective hydraulic control unit (HCU)/anti-lock brake (ABU) system modules, according to a recall report posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
FCA says the defect can cause the vehicles to roll away on their own due to the HCU/ABU model falsely reading its primary circuit.
The false reading can cause the vehicles’ brake lights to illuminate and the vehicle to start and shift out of park when the brake pedal is not being depressed, according to the FCA recall.
FCA recall notice says Jeep, Dodge drivers given no warning of defect
While FCA says there is no warning for drivers, in the event a failure occurs, the company says the vehicles’ dash light may illuminate and/or the brake lights may stay on even after the vehicle is put in park or turned off.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles affected by the recall were built between June 10, 2018, and April 30, 2019, during which time the potentially defective HCU/ABU modules were involved in production, according to the FCA recall.
FCA says that a remedy for the issue is currently under development and noted that it has a “longstanding policy and practice of reimbursing owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action.”
Last month, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against FCA over claims the auto manufacturer sold certain vehicles containing defective engine valve train systems.
