Ford Motor Company Escape, Bronco Pick-Up Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ford Motor Company has issued recalls for more than 737,000 vehicles, including 2020-2022 Escape and 2021-2022 Bronco Sport vehicles.
  • Why: About half of the vehicles have a potential oil leak, and the other half have faulty trailer brakes.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Ford Motor Company has issued recalls for more than 737,000 vehicles with about half risking fiery oil leaks and the other half suffering from dodgy trailer brakes.

Ford announced this week it was recalling 345,451 of its 2020-2022 Escape and 2021-2022 Bronco Sport vehicles with 1.5L engines as the engine oil separator housing may crack and develop an oil leak.

“An oil leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire,” the company says.

The recall notice was posted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website Mar. 25.

Ford to Inspect, Replace Defective Parts

Ford says cracks at the edge of the oil separator housing were causing a loss of seal support, which can lead to an oil leak between the oil separator and engine camshaft cover.

“If sufficient engine oil leaks, accumulates, and migrates to an ignition source, an under hood fire can occur, increasing the risk of injury,” the recall notice says.

Drivers are warned that they may smell or see oil smoke emanating from the under hood area.

Owners of affected cars will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the oil separator inspected for damage or oil leaks, and, if either is present, to replace the oil separator and seals. There will be no charge for this service, Ford said.

Notification to dealers has begun. Mailing of owner notification letters is expected to begin Apr. 18.

Ford Recalls 392K Vehicles Due to Trailer Brakes Not Working Properly

Meanwhile, Ford is also recalling 391,836 of its 2021-2022 F-150, 2022 Maverick, Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 vehicles as the trailer brakes can fail.

“Loss of trailer brake functionality could result in extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash,” according to the recall posted Mar. 25 on the NHTSA website.

The issue is due to a software error, the company said. The error means a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric-over hydraulic brake system may not brake.

Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have the integrated trailer brake control module software updated. There will be no charge for this service, the company said.

Ford is not currently facing legal action over the recalls, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Last year, Ford was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging a Ford Fusion transmission problem can allegedly cause sudden shaking, violent jerking and difficulty stopping.

The lawsuit alleges most of the problems come from Fusion 6F35 transmissions found in all automatic, non-hybrid Fusions from 2013 and later. The issue also allegedly affects many 2010-2012 Ford Fusions.

In December, Ford announced a recall for nearly 115,000 of its 2021 and 2022 model Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs over faulty rear brake linings.
