Toyota Recall Overview:

  • Who: Toyota has recalled its BZ4X electric car.
  • Why: The bolts that hold the wheels on the electric SUVs can loosen and cause the wheels to fall off.
  • Where: The Toyota recall affects vehicles sold in the United States.

Owners a Toyota BZ4X electric car should stop driving it immediately because the wheels may fall off.

Toyota announced the electric car recall on June 23, warning drivers to stop driving the affected vehicles because of the risk that the wheels may detach.

According to the Toyota recall, the bolts that hold the wheels on BZ4X electric SUVs can loosen and allow the wheels to separate from the vehicle while driving. This issue may occur even if the electric car does not have many miles on it.

No fix available yet for vehicles involved in Toyota recall

Toyota says it is still investigating the cause of the electric car defect and whether there are certain conditions that make it more likely to occur. The automaker does not currently have a fix for the issue.

In the meantime, Toyota dealers will bring owners’ BZ4X vehicles to the dealership and provide them with a free loaner vehicle until a fix is available.

The 2023 Toyota BZ4X is the automaker’s first fully battery-powered electric car, which was released less than two months ago. Toyota has pledged to spend more than $17 billion to release as many as 30 battery-powered vehicles by 2030.

The Toyota recall affects 2,700 electric cars globally, 280 of which were to be sold in North America. According to CNN, approximately 260 BZ4X vehicles have been delivered to U.S. customers.

Those who have questions about Toyota’s electric car recall can call the automaker’s customer service line at 800-331-4331.

Drivers may be affected by another Toyota recall involving Tundra trucks, other vehicles

A separate Toyota recall has been issued for 46,000 Tundra trucks over concerns the nuts on the rear axle assembly can loosen, potentially affecting the truck’s braking and stability. This is a separate issue from the one affecting the recalled BZ4X vehicles, Toyota says.

These latest safety recalls come on the heels of another Toyota recall that affects about 460,000 vehicles nationwide due to a software glitch in their stability control systems.

That Toyota recall includes certain Venza, Mirai, RAV4 Hybrid, RAV4 Prime, Sienna HV, Highlander HV, Lexus LS500h, LX600, NX350h, and NX450h+ vehicles.
