Ford Mustang Recall Overview:

  • Who: Ford is recalling certain 2019-2020 Mustang vehicles.
  • Why: The recalled Ford Mustangs have a potential issue with the Powertrain Control Module software.
  • Where: The Ford Mustang recall affects vehicles in the United States.

Owners of certain 2019-2020 Ford Mustangs should check their mailboxes because they may soon be receiving notice of a Ford Mustang recall due to faulty powertrain control modules.

Ford has issued a recall of certain 2019-2020 Ford Mustangs equipped with manual transmissions and 5.0L engines. The recalled Mustangs may have a faulty powertrain control module that disables important safety features including:

  • Rear view camera
  • Reverse light
  • Traction control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind spot warning
  • Cross traffic indicator

When these important safety features are disabled, drivers may face an increased risk of a crash.

Ford Mustang recall notices are expected to be mailed June 13.

The Mustang recall affects 25,032 vehicles that were produced at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, from Jan. 18, 2018, through Dec. 16, 2020.

Ford Mustang recall will provide free powertrain control module software repairs or refunds

Consumers who own one of the recalled Ford Mustang vehicles, a Ford dealer will update the powertrain control module software for free. They do not need to wait to receive the Ford Mustang recall notice in the mail. As long as they own one of the recalled vehicles, a Ford dealership will repair the powertrain software for free.

Mustang owners who already paid for repairs covered by the recall may be eligible for reimbursement. Refunds will only cover the cost associated with a manual gear position sensor that causes the rear view camera and reverse lamps to stop working, according to the Mustang recall documents.

Owners seeking a refund must submit a receipt that includes a breakdown of the amount paid for parts, labor, taxes, and other costs.

The Ford Mustang recall number is 22S37.

Vehicle owners with questions or concerns about the Mustang recall can call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Ford recently dodged a class action lawsuit alleging certain Mustangs, Expeditions and Explorers have a peeling paint defect. The judge in that case denied the plaintiffs’ request for Class certification because he determined they did not have standing to bring claims on behalf of individuals who own vehicles of makes and models the plaintiffs do not own.
