Ground Beef E. Coli Recall Overview:

  • Who: Lakeside Refrigerated Services is recalling about 120,872 pounds of ground beef products.
  • Why: The products may be contaminated with E. coli.
  • Where: The products were shipped nationwide.

More than 60 tons of ground beef is being recalled nationwide as it may be contaminated with  E. coli, according to federal safety regulators.

Lakeside Refrigerated Services announced it was recalling approximately 120,872 pounds of ground beef in a notice posted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website Apr. 25.

The New Jersey company said the products may be contaminated with E. coli O103.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them,” the recall states. “These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The affected ground beef products were produced from Feb. 1 through April 8, 2022.

The complete list of products and product codes for the recalled beef products can be found here. Labels for the ground beef products can be found here.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The ground beef was shipped to retail locations nationwide.

E. Coli Contamination Discovered During Routine Testing, According to Recall Notice

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS testing of imported products, the recall says.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions from eating the ground beef so far, the company said.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

People typically become ill from the contamination about 2–8 days after consuming the organism. Most people infected with the E. coli O103 develop diarrhea and vomiting; however, some illnesses last longer and can be more severe.

The FSIS said infection is usually diagnosed by testing of a stool sample.

“Vigorous rehydration and other supportive care is the usual treatment; antibiotic treatment is generally not recommended,” the ground beef recall notice stated.

Most people recover within a week, but, rarely, some develop a more severe infection.

Meanwhile, Interstate Meat Dist. Inc. has recalled 28,356 pounds of its ground beef products due to fears that the meat could be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the most common E. coli strain to cause severe illness in humans.
