  • Who: Mercedes-Benz recalled 42,742 of its model year 2019-2021 A-Class, CLA, GLA and GLB vehicles.
  • Why: The vehicles are not equipped with a brake inspection gauge for their rear axle brake pads, and the owners manuals do not include standard information for its use.
  • Where: The Mercedes-Benz brake inspection gauge recall is effective across the United States.

Mercedes-Benz initiated a recall for 42,742 of its model year 2019-2021 A-Class, CLA, GLA and GLB vehicles after finding the vehicles do not include a brake inspection gauge for their rear axle brake pads and the owners manuals do not include standard information for its use.

The Mercedes-Benz brake inspection gauge recall includes 22,434 of the 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz A 2020s, along with 8,952 of the 2020 CLA 250s, 478 of the 2021 GLA 250s, 9,881 of the 2020 GLB 250s, 159 of the 2020 AMG A 35s, 147 of the 2020 AMG CLA 45s and 691 of the 2020 AMG CLA 691s.

The front brake pads include a sensor that provides a vehicle “check brake pads” warning, and a Mercedes-Benz investigation into the vehicles showed force distribution means the front brake pads will always wear down before the rear brake pads, according to the recall. The warning light will only turn off if the brake pads are replaced.

“Internal vehicle tests have shown that even with completely worn brake pads on the rear axle, the potentially affected vehicles will still meet the legal performance requirements for stopping distance,” the Mercedes-Benz defect recall says.

Dealerships will add inspection gauge, owners manual addendum, Mercedes-Benz recall says

Mercedes-Benz did not indicate it has received any reports of injury related to the recall. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The automaker will ask consumers to take the vehicle to a dealer to add an inspection gauge and an owners manual addendum. Owners can reach Mercedes-Benz at (877) 496-3691.

In September, Mercedes-Benz USA announced a recall for 11,853 model year 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 vehicles over concerns a trailer hitch defect could cause the vehicles to detach from a tow truck.
