Rav4 recall overview:

  • Who: Toyota is issuing a safety recall for 1,854,000 of its 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles.
  • Why: The housing for some replacement 12-volt batteries can become loose if the hold-down clamp is not tightened properly, leading to a fire hazard if the vehicle is driven with forceful turns.
  • Where: The RAV4 recall is valid across the United States.

Toyota is issuing a safety recall for more than 1.8 million of its 2013-2018 RAV4 vehicles due to a fire hazard created with some replacement 12-volt batteries.

Some 12-volt replacement batteries have different dimensions on their top and, if a small-top battery of the size specified for the vehicle is used, it can become loose if the hold-down clamp is not tightened correctly, the Toyota recall says.

There is then risk that, if the vehicle is driven with forceful turns, it can cause the positive battery terminal to come in contact with the hold-down clamp and then short circuit, creating an increased fire risk, the RAV4 recall says.

Toyota is working on remedy to replace faulty parts at no cost to vehicle owners, recall says

Toyota did not say whether it has received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Toyota is working on a remedy so Toyota dealers can replace the battery hold-down clamp, battery tray and positive terminal cover at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notice of the recall will be sent to customers by late December, the Toyota recall notice says.

Toyota manufactured and sold model year 2019-2021 Toyota RAV4 vehicles equipped with defective roof rails that can ultimately render them inoperable, a class action lawsuit earlier this year alleged.

My RAV4 is included in this recall. I found out thru Carfax. I called my dealership and they told me what it was all about. They said Toyota is working on fixing the problem and that I will get a letter from Toyota in the mail when they do in a red/white envelope.
