Honda rust recall overview:

  • Who: Honda has recalled almost 564,000 CR-Vs made from 2007 through 2011.
  • Why: Road salt can cause the frame to rust and rear suspension parts to come loose.
  • Where: The Honda rust recall is active in the United States.

Honda has initiated a recall on 563,711 Honda CR-Vs made from 2007 through 2011 because road salt can cause the frame to rust and rear suspension parts to come loose.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website March 30.

The recall applies to CR-Vs sold or registered in states where salt is used to clear roads in the winter, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C.

According to the recall, salt can accumulate and cause corrosion, and the rear trailing arm can detach. Rear trailing arms connect the rear axle to the chassis.

That can cause drivers to lose control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will repair vehicle, or Honda will buy it back

According to recall documents, Honda has had 61 customer complaints in the U.S. but no deaths or injuries.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Dealers will inspect the SUVs and install a support brace or repair the rear frame if needed. If the frame is badly damaged, Honda may offer to buy the vehicle. Owners will be notified by letter starting May 8, the company said.

Meanwhile, Honda has issued a recall of 330,318 vehicle side-view mirrors, with an estimated 1% defective, due to an issue with the adhesive on the mirrors’ heating pad.

  1. Gerald Bruette says:

Owned a 2007 CR-V and the rear trailing arm broke while traveling on Interstate 70 in Indiana in Dec. 2022. Vehicle was scrapped by the insurance company and a Honda dealer, sold the vehicle to a mechanic at the dealership. Used a rental vehicle to get home to Wisconsin. Reported to NHTSA and Honda in January 2023. Honda issued the recall in March 2023. Honda won’t pay for vehicle or communicate with me.

After reading the claims on the NHTSA website, I would guess that there’s about 60 other former owners that won’t be compensated for their irreparable vehicles because they failed before the recall. I understand that there may be a similar problem with the Honda Element also. I don’t think Honda is treating customers very well.

  2. Kathy Laughlin says:

I own a 1999 Honda CRV with major rust to the point that I have had to scrap it due to the dangers of driving it safely. I was told the metal that holds the front & back suspension falls apart with just a finger push. This includes the area that holds the motor in as well. I know this is not in the years that are recalled but the issue is still affecting my Honda. I just found this out when I took it into a repair shop & was told it is a miracle you were not injured badly or killed due to the degree of rust. It is so bad the repair shop said it was too dangerous to put on a lift even. Now I am without a vehicle because of this issue. What to do???

  5. Benjamin A Quidayan says:

I own a 2007 Honda CR-V with ID # JHLRE48567C067259. Will it qualify for inspection by Honda dealer.

  6. Anna Dudley says:

I have a Honda pilot 2005 that has rust issues under carriage in the back this year should also qualify!

  7. Michael Mihalik says:

I had one of these and the rear suspension broke entirely while I was driving it. I had to scrap the vehicle last fall. Is there anything I can do about this now?
