Chrysler (FCA US) has issued a recall on 131,700 Ram 1500 pickup trucks manufactured in 2021 due to a powertrain software issue.
The recall was published on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website April 13. It applies to certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 5.7L eTorque engines.
According to the recall, the powertrain control module software may cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition in the engine, and result in an engine stall.
“Some 2021 MY Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with the 5.7L eTorque engine may experience an engine shut down caused by an over rich fuel condition under certain operating conditions,” the recall states.
The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Dealers to repair issue for free
The investigation into the issue was opened Jan. 20, after a potential stall condition while driving, the company said.
By March, FCA had determined the affected vehicles were equipped with powertrain control module software that was the origin of the stalls.
FCA US is aware of one accident and no injuries related to the issue, it said.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module calibration software, free of charge, the company said. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 2, 2023.
FCA US will reimburse owners who have incurred the cost of repairing a problem that subsequently becomes the subject of a field action. It will request that customers send the original receipt and/or other adequate proof of payment to the company for confirmation of the expense, it added.
The automaker was also named in a recent class action alleging FCA and Stellantis manufactured and sold model year 2017-2018 Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 pickup trucks that allegedly are equipped with defective hydraulic control units and antilock braking systems.
