  • Why: The tires do not meet the traction requirements for tires.

Michelin has recalled a number of replacement tires in the United States and Canada as they do not meet the traction requirements.

The recall was published on the Michelin website April 20. It applies to Michelin Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric tires, in sizes 185/60R15C, 195/75R16C, 205/65R15C, 205/75R16C, 225/75R16C and 235/65R16C.

According to the recall, these tires are marked with the Alpine symbol but do not meet the traction requirements for snow tires.

As such, these tires fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 139 and Canadian Technical Standards Document (TSD) 139, the recall states.

“Agilis CrossClimate C-Metric sizes are commercial service heavy duty light truck tires, with a design that differs from the Agilis CrossClimate LT-Metric design,” Michelin explained in an email to Top Class Actions. “The LT-Metric tire design meets the requirement for the Alpine Symbol and all LT-Metric sizes are qualified for severe snow service. Additionally, the CrossClimate and CrossClimate 2 passenger and SUV tire lines are not affected by this recall.”

Michelin ‘working on a remedy’

The tires were sold as replacements and normally are used with a Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster, Volkswagen Crafter, Nissan NV200, Chevrolet City Express or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

“Consistent with our replacement plan, Michelin recommends exchanging these tires,” the recall said.

In the recall, Michelin added it is “diligently working on a remedy,” which will be included in an owner notification letter that will be sent in June.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. over the way it handled the recall for one of its tires that has been linked to dozens of injuries and a total of eight deaths.

In June 2022, Goodyear agreed to recall 173,000 of its recreational vehicle tires — nearly two decades after the last one was made — after investigators found their failure caused crashes that killed eight people and injured 69 others from 1998 through 2009.

  1. Jwee Tan says:

Makes no sense that Michelin is offering to replace a tire that does not meet the Alpine certification with a cheaper one that does NOT qualify for the Alpine certification. How does this compensate consumers that were duped into paying more for the original “Alpine-rated” tires?
