Honda fuel pump recall overview:

  • Who: Honda is recalling more than 2.5 million of its vehicles due to a fuel pump defect.
  • Why: An improperly molded fuel pump has left some fuel pumps inoperable, meaning vehicles either don’t start or may stall during operation.
  • Where: The Honda recall is effective across the United States.

Honda has issued a recall of more than 2.5 million of its vehicles due to a fuel pump defect that can cause the vehicles to not start or to shut down during operation.

The wide range of Honda vehicles involved in the recall are:

  • 2017-2020 Honda Accord Hybrid and Acura NSX
  • 2018-2019 Honda Clarity PHEV and Fit
  • 2018-2020 Honda Accord, Civic Coupe, Civic Sedan, Civic Hatchback, Civic Type R, CR-V, HR-V, Ridgeline and Odyssey
  • 2018-2020 Acura ILX, MDX, MDX Hybrid, RDX, RLX and TLX
  • 2019-2020 Honda Insight and Passport
  • 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid

The fuel pump is molded improperly and left some fuel pumps inoperable, meaning vehicles either don’t start or may stall during operation, the recall says.

If the impeller surface gets exposed to production solvent drying for longer periods of time, the surface may crack and lead to excessive fuel absorption, resulting in impeller deformation, interference with the fuel pump body and then an inoperable fuel pump, the Honda recall says.

Honda defects led to 4,042 warranty claims related to fuel pump issue

Honda says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Honda had 4,042 warranty claims as of Dec. 12 related to the defect. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by mail sent by Feb. 5 and notified to bring the vehicles to a dealership. Dealers were notified of the issue Dec. 19.

Vehicle owners who already paid for repairs can file for reimbursement. Honda can be reached at 888-234-2138.

Honda initiated a number of recalls recently over concerns involving defects related to seat belts, steering racks, connecting rods and pressure washer engines.

I own a 2018 CR-V had a recall to replace the fuel pump in February 2024. I recently faced an engine stall while driving at 75mph on 95 express lane, all lights came on and all systems stopped working and the car went into limp mode. I nearly had an accident and I was on the shoulder lane in grave danger until rescued by the road ranger. The vehicle computer code came out to P0087 – which is the fuel line. On the bulletin issued by Honda, the first step to remedy the code is to replace the “Fuel Pump”. However, at the Honda dealer their system showed that Honda “removed: the recall, hence refusing to change the fuel pump all together. Instead they recommended fix steps two and three – which is the high pressure fuel pump and the injectors. After three weeks, Honda has refused to honor the recall and replace the fuel pump and to give any help to solve my issue.

My 2019 is recalled for the fuel pump. 23V-858 is the recall number but there is no remedy and it was issued dec 2023. My car is considered dangerous to drive as it can stall while driving. It is now April 1, 2023 so that is 4 months now and they have no idea when they will have a part for it. I would like to sue them for lost wages from my Turo income or just get my money back on the car. What are my rights with this case? How long is too long to wait?

I called the dealership where I purchased my Honda Civic hatchback and was told Honda is short on parts and are only replacing the fuel pumps in certain parts of the country. Unfortunately, I cannot get my 2020 Honda fixed because they don’t have the parts.
