Volkswagen Tiguan, Taos Rear Knuckles Recall Overview:

  • Who: Volkswagen has recalled more than 10,000 of its model year 2022 Tiguan, 2021 Tiguan LWB and 2022 Taos vehicles.
  • Why: VW initiated the recall over concern certain of the vehicles were manufactured with rear knuckles that were incorrectly casted.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Volkswagen has initiated a recall for more than 10,000 of its 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, 2021 Tiguan LWB and 2022 Taos vehicles over concerns they were manufactured with incorrect rear knuckles.

VW is estimating that only 6% of the recalled vehicles are affected by the defect, which the automaker says is based on production records, according to a safety recall report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Mar. 23.

The recall was initiated over concerns that, under oxide influence, the vehicle’s left or rear right suspension knuckle could crack or break, according to the recall report.

VW says that, in the event the rear knuckle breaks, the vehicle’s suspension would be “compromised” and, depending on the situation, could pose a crash risk.

The issue is caused by a sporadic and isolated failure of a “break waves mechanism in degassing station,” which is supposed to remove impurities before the rear knuckles are injected, according to the recall report.

VW says the issue is also caused by a manufacturing error that caused incorrect parts to be made due to a failure during the casting process.

The recall was recommended to VW’s product safety committee on Mar. 3 while the automaker decided to go through with the recall on Mar. 16, according to the report.

Volkswagen Suspects 1,242 Parts Incorrectly Manufactured

VW says it based its decision to initiate the recall on discovering that 1,242 parts were suspected to be incorrectly casted during the manufacturing process.

The automaker says it will remedy the issue by inspecting and, if necessary, replacing the vehicle’s rear knuckles at no cost to the owner.

Volkswagen will also offer a reimbursement plan as part of the recall and says it has no “records of any other failure event of the equipment before or after the ones identified,” according to the report.

The component that will be installed in the vehicles as a replacement is the same as the one being removed, except that it has been casted correctly, according to the recall report.

Volkswagen says it plans to notify owners and dealers about the recall on or before May 20.

The German automaker initiated a separate recall earlier this month for more than 4,000 of its 2022 GOLF R vehicles over concerns their engine covers could come loose and start a fire

  1. Keith Bostwick says:

Joseph, I’m with you on this! I bought, now regretting, a new 2022 Tiguan and in less the 5K miles, <12 months the transmission lags, the engine ticks, the rear tail light failed-took a month a 3 follow up calls to get replaced-can't say fixed because I have 0 confidence in the car.
Most of all the electrical system had failed repeatedly. Radio won't work, all steering wheel controls fail and even fail to power on, check engine light comes on and lots and lots of yellow triangles with exclamation marks.
Took car in bitterly complained and the dealer offers to trade the car in! Trade in!!!
Offered a replacement 2022 Tiguan with less features, the wrong color, for $400 less than what I originally paid but they'd have to start a new loan (after having made 12 months of payments) with a balance almost $3000 more than my current balance!
Dealer promised and promised the new car wouldn't have any issues as it's from the 2nd half of 2022.
Turned them down but they left the car with me as the loaner they owe me and wouldn't you know…in less than 30 miles the radio failed – steering wheel controls wouldn't work the center console controls for the radio wouldn't work…drive home go to park the car, put in reverse and the backup camera fails to turn on or work. Better yet park the car, turn off the engine and the radio won't turn off along with the dashboard. Turn car on/off and electrical still wouldn't turn off. Just locked the car and left it – it finally turned itself off.
Had some nice words with the dealer…

  3. Joseph Payne says:

This is my second Volkswagen vehicle and also broken down. Breaks and all other kinds of problems. This is my SECOND “lemon” from Volkswagen and I am currently now borrowing a vehicle until I can afford to make up for all the money I put unto my vehicles only to have them break down almost immediately.
