Jeep recall overview:

  • Who: Chrysler recalled nearly 200,000 of its model year 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) SUVs and 59,825 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV SUVs.
  • Why: The automaker initiated the recall over concerns the vehicles were built with software that was incorrectly programmed, potentially disabling their windshield defrost systems under certain conditions.
  • Where: The recall affects certain Jeep vehicle owners nationwide.

Chrysler issued a recall of nearly 200,000Jeep plug-in hybrid electric vehicles over concerns they may have been built with a defect: incorrectly programmed hybrid control processor software that could potentially cause their windshield defrost system to become disabled under certain conditions.

The recall involves a total of 139,318 model year 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle SUVs and 59,825 model year 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle SUVs.

Chrysler said that, under certain conditions, the recalled Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee vehicles may not have functional defrosting and defogging systems, as required by federal safety standards.

“A disabled windshield defrost system may decrease outward visibility in certain driving conditions which may cause a crash without prior warning,” the Jeep defect recall states.

Affected vehicle owners to be notified of Jeep recall in April

Chrysler said it plans to remedy the recall by updating the hybrid control processor software on the recalled Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs with software that meets federal safety standards.

The automaker says it will begin notifying affected vehicle owners about the Jeep defrost defect recall on or about April 5, 2024.

Chrysler previously recalled more than 44,000 of its Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer vehicles in August 2023 over concerns they were equipped with airbags that could fail to deploy properly, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
