Hyundai engine recall overview:
- Who: Hyundai Motor America recalled more than 90,000 of its model year 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80, Genesis G90 and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles.
- Why: The recall was initiated over concerns a short circuit in the vehicles’ starter motor could lead to an engine compartment fire.
- Where: The recall affects certain Genesis vehicle owners nationwide.
Hyundai issued a recall of more than 90,000 Genesis vehicles over concerns an electrical short could occur in their starter motor, leading to an eventual engine compartment fire.
The recall involves certain model year 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis, 2017-2019 Genesis G80, Genesis G90 and 2019 Genesis G70 vehicles.
Hyundai said the starter solenoid could become contaminated with water in the recalled Genesis vehicles if they are operated in abnormally wet conditions. This could lead to an engine short and a risk of fire, the manufacturer said.
“Moisture contamination within the starter solenoid could cause an electrical short over time,” the Hyundai recall states.
Hyundai engine fire recall: Genesis owners should park outside, away from structures
Hyundai said vehicle owners can continue to drive the recalled Genesis vehicles, but should park them outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed.
The automaker will fix the issue by having its dealers install a remedy relay kit in the recalled vehicles’ engine junction box, free of charge, according to the Hyundai fire recall notice.
“This remedy will be offered at no cost to owners for all affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty,” the Hyundai engine fire recall states.
Hyundai said it will also reimburse affected vehicle owners for any out-of-pocket expenses they incurred while trying to remedy the issue.
The automaker said it plans to notify dealers and vehicle owners about the recall April 13.
In November, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into 16 recalls involving a total of 6.4 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles that were initiated over fire hazard concerns.

12 thoughts onHyundai recall issued due to engine fire risk
I have a 2014 Hyundai Genesis that has the same issues listed for recall. I contacted Hyundai corporate office and they told me that my vehicle wasn’t on their recall list but to take it to a Hyundai dealership and if they deem the issue to be recall related they could fill out a form to have them consider making repairs. Absolutely ridiculous that they say they aren’t able to determine anything and can’t find the problem
I have a Hyundai Elantra (2020) that had a new engine installed, engine recall notice, in May 2022. After installing the new engine I began having steering issues and when I returned it, on 100,000 ml. Contract, for service and repair the local dealership, N. Chas.,S.C , instead of repairing my vehicle they had it illegally towed off their, claiming my vehicle was abandoned, to Princess Towing Co., in N.Chas., S.C . I was never contacted by the dealership instead the Towing Company contacted me about my vehicle. To make matters worse, Hyundai Motor North Charleston dealership contacted my finance company (Santander Cooperation), they not only didn’t repair my vehicle but also intentionally had my vehicle repossessed. It is now in the possession, with all of my personal and private possessions inside, of Santander Cooperation since approx. Aug.2023. The finance company and I made an agreement (recorded telephone conversation) that they are now refusing to honor. I definitely need legal assistance with this matter. Thank you!
