Empanada recall overview:

  • Who: Empanadas Valrico Inc. recalled approximately 6,247 pounds of beef and chicken empanadas.
  • Why: The products were not inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  • Where: The empanadas are being recalled in Florida.

More than three tons of beef and chicken empanadas are being recalled in Florida because the products were not inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Florida empanada recall notice was posted Sept. 23 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website and applies to approximately 6,247 pounds of beef and chicken empanadas made by Empanadas Valrico Inc., a Sarasota company.

The frozen beef and chicken empanadas were produced and distributed to Florida retailers from March to September 2022. To check if you have the affected product, click here

Florida empanada recall says company not federally inspected establishment

The products subject to recall do not bear the USDA mark of inspection because Empanadas Valrico Inc. is not a federally inspected establishment, the recall states.

The problem was discovered when the Florida Department of Agriculture notified FSIS that the frozen empanada products did not have the USDA mark of inspection and were produced in an establishment that was not inspected by USDA.

“There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider,” the Florida empanada recall states.

Meanwhile, FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ freezers.

“Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” according to the Florida empanada recall.

Similarly, last September, SAS Foods Enterprises Inc. had to recall approximately 3,768 pounds of its frozen chicken and beef empanada products after it was discovered they also were made without federal inspection and were packaged with a false USDA inspection label.
