BMW has recalled 51 vehicles — including 41 SUVs — as the affected vehicles were manufactured with front seat frames that may not have been appropriately welded to the seat rails.

The recall was published to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on March 29 and applies to 10 units of the BMW 3 Series model years 2019 to 2021.

The 330i, the 330i xDrive, and the M340i xDrive are also on the list of affected models, as well as 36 units of the X3 model years 2020-2021 and five examples of the 2021 X4, including the X4 M.

According to the recall, the front seats fitted to the affected cars “may not have been produced by the supplier according to specifications.”

The seat frame may not have been properly welded to the seat rails, increasing the risk of injuries in an accident because the impact could cause the front passengers to move around.

Drivers may be notified of the problem by a noise or a vibration.

Welding process issue identified

BMW’s supplier, Lear, traced the problem to an issue involving the laser welding process performed by a sub-supplier named Adient Ramos.

BMW said it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Owners of the affected cars will receive more details by mail starting on May 19, 2023.

They will need to bring the vehicle to an authorized BMW dealership so a technician can replace the seat’s frame and back rest.

Meanwhile, BMW overstates the driving range of some of its i3 passenger vehicles in cold weather, a 2022 class action lawsuit alleges.
