Several class action settlements opened in September for consumers to make claims to join during the month of October and beyond. 

Companies made the class action settlements to resolve claims revolving around data breaches, false advertising, defective products and improper payouts, among other things. 

A business or entity will often choose to agree on a class action settlement — without admitting fault or wrongdoing — to avoid litigation and garner goodwill with consumers.

T-Mobile agrees to pay $350 million to resolve claims it failed to prevent data breach 

T-Mobile agreed to pay $350 million to resolve claims the company failed to ward off a data breach that compromised the sensitive information of 76 million Americans. 

The settlement benefits consumers who had their information exposed during a data breach that T-Mobile announced in August last year. 

Eligible class members will be able to receive, among other things, reimbursement of up to $25,000 each for any out-of-pocket losses incurred because of the data breach. 

To join the class action settlement, consumers must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 23, 2023. 

Bayer HealthCare, Beiersdorf pay $2 million after allegedly selling Coppertone sunscreen containing benzene

Bayer HealthCare and Beiersdorf agreed to a class action settlement worth $2 million to end claims the companies sold Coppertone brand sunscreen containing the cancer-causing chemical benzene

The settlement will benefit consumers who purchased certain Coppertone sunscreen products, including ones marketed for kids and babies, before Aug. 2. 

Eligible class members showing proof of purchase will be eligible to receive a full refund. Those without proof of purchase can get reimbursement in the form of the average retail price for up to six affected products per household. 

Individuals wanting to join the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 7. 

Avis Budget Car Rental pays $34 million to end claims it failed to purchase liability insurance for renters

Avid Budget Car Rental agreed to pay $34 million to resolve claims it failed on its promise to purchase liability insurance as part of its rental contracts. 

The class action settlement will benefit consumers who rented either an Avis or Budget vehicle while in Florida between June 12, 2008, and Jan. 1, 2016, and who had rental receipts with notations of “ALI .00/Day Accepted” or “SLI .00/Day Accepted.” 

Eligible class members will receive a cash reimbursement based on the days they rented their vehicle. 

To join the class action settlement, they must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 20, 2023. 

Robinhood agrees to settlement ending claims it failed to prevent data breach 

Robinhood agreed to a class action settlement that will end claims the company failed to stop a data breach that led to an unauthorized third party taking over some of the accounts. 

The class action settlement will benefit Robinhood users who had an unauthorized access event — that was either reported to or from Robinhood — on their account between Jan. 1, 2020, and April 27, 2022. 

Eligible class members will be able to receive as much as $100 as reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the data breach, in addition to other potential financial compensation totaling up to $260. 

Individuals who want to join the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by Jan. 17, 2023. 

Subaru settles claims it sold vehicles that drain batteries faster than expected

Subaru agreed to a class action settlement that will resolve claims the automaker sold certain vehicles that can drain a battery faster than expected

The class action settlement will benefit current and former owners and lessees, outside of Alaska and Hawaii, of model year 2015-2020 Forester, Outback, Legacy and WRX vehicles and model year 2019-2020 Ascent vehicles. 

Consumers must submit a valid claim form within 60 days of the settlement’s effective date, with an estimated deadline as early as March 9, 2023. 

FCA to pay $8 million to end claims it sold vehicles with an oil consumption defect

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles agreed to pay $8 million to end allegations that some of its Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Fiat vehicles suffer from an oil consumption defect that can lead to engine failure.

The class action settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of certain FCA vehicles containing a 2.4L Tigershark engine.

Individuals who want to join the class action settlement must submit a valid claim form by March 1, 2023. 

DirecTV agrees to pay $17 million to resolve claims it violated TCPA with unsolicited telemarketing calls

DirecTV agreed to a class action settlement worth $17 million to resolve claims it sent unsolicited telemarketing calls to consumers, violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act

The class action settlement will benefit consumers who have not been a DirecTV customer since Oct. 1, 2004, yet received a phone call from DirecTV or a company working on behalf of DirecTV regarding a debt owed to them.

Consumers must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 19 to be eligible to join the class action settlement. 

FCA settles claims it sold certain Chrysler Pacifica vehicles that can lose power, stall without warning

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US agreed to a class action settlement that will end allegations it sold certain Chrysler Pacifica vehicles that can lose power suddenly and stall without warning. 

The class action settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of model year 2017-2021 Chrysler Pacifica vehicles built with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with a nine-speed transmission and sold in the United States. 

Individuals must submit a valid claim form by an estimated deadline of Aug. 14, 2023. 

Red Robin to pay $450,000 to end claims it sold Stella Artois beer in smaller chalice than advertised

Red Robin agreed to pay $450,000 to resolve claims the restaurant chain sold Stella Artois beer in containers that were smaller than advertised

The class action settlement benefits consumers who purchased a “small” Stella Artois beer served in a Stella Artois chalice from a Red Robin Gourmet Burger and Brews between June 25, 2017, and July 21, 2022.

They must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 23 to join the class action settlement. 

GEICO settlement worth $19.1 million resolves claims it failed to provide sales tax  

GEICO agreed to a settlement worth $19.1 million that will end allegations the insurance company failed to provide sales tax while paying out claims for total loss vehicles. 

The class action settlement will benefit individuals insured with a California auto insurance policy through GEICO and who were paid neither regulatory fees nor sales tax for a total loss claim made between June 27, 2015, for GEICO General policyholders, Oct. 23, 2016, for GEICO Indemnity holders, or June 30, 2017, for GEICO Casualty or Government Employees Insurance Company holders, through Aug. 27, 2020. 

Individuals who want to join the class action lawsuit must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 11.
