Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) US LLC agreed to pay $8 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles with 2.4L Tigershark engines suffer an oil consumption defect that causes engine failure.

The settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of the following vehicles equipped with a 2.4L Tigershark engine:

  • 2015-2017 Chrysler 200
  • 2013-2016 Dodge Dart
  • 2014-2019 Jeep Cherokee manufactured prior to July 2018
  • 2015-2018 Jeep Renegade
  • 2017-2018 Jeep Compass
  • 2015-2018 Ram Promaster City
  • 2016-2018 Fiat 500x

FCA is an automotive manufacturing company. It is a subsidiary of Stellantis, which sells vehicles under brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, Ram and more.

According to a class action lawsuit, certain Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles suffer from an oil consumption defect. When the affected vehicles consume too much oil, the oil pressure in 2.4L Tigershark engines allegedly drops to dangerous levels — causing the vehicles to shut down unexpectedly.

Plaintiffs in the case say they were not sufficiently warned of the issue and, when their engines failed, were forced to pay out of pocket to fix the issue.

FCA hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to an $8 million lawsuit settlement to resolve these allegations.

Under the terms of the FCA Tigershark class action lawsuit settlement, class members can receive extended warranty benefits, payments and product improvement benefits.

The extended warranty extends the FCA Powertrain Limited Warranty to seven years or 100,000 miles. This extension covers all parts and labor required to fix the oil consumption defect.

Product improvements include FCA customer service notifications (CSN W20, CSN W80 and CSN W84) to remedy the oil consumption defect in certain vehicles.

All class members covered under CSN W80 are eligible to have an oil consumption test performed for free. If this test shows a significant defect, FCA will replace the vehicle’s engine long block.

Class Members whose vehicles are covered by CSN W80 and whose engine long blocks are replaced will automatically receive a $340 payment.

Class members may be eligible for additional cash payments under the terms of the FCA settlement.

Class members who paid for repairs related to the oil consumption defect can receive reimbursement for these repairs. Reimbursements are also available for repair-related transportation costs such as rental cars and towing services. Exact payments will vary.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Oct. 21, 2022.

The final approval hearing for the FCA Tigershark lawsuit settlement is scheduled for Dec. 1, 2022.

Class members who do not submit a claim will be able to receive extended warranty benefits and engine long block replacement payments.

In order to receive certain other benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by March 1, 2023.

  1. April Humphrey says:

When is payout? I almost lost my life several times I submitted all the documents in a timely manner?

  2. Frank A. Lopez says:

I was never notified that we could file a claim. I was led to believed Chrysler would notified me of the claim procedure. My 2018 Cherokee is still burning a quart of oil a month.

  3. Ray says:

I received a card saying i did t need to do anything to get the extended warranty for my 2018 jeep compass. Is my cars extended engine warranty automatic? Thats the way I understood it.

  4. Markus Reed says:

My wife and I bought a 2016 Fiat 500x with less than 3000 miles. My wife loves it but it started having issues at50,000 miles, low oil and coolant between changes. Engine light coming on periodically. Took it to Tacoma Dodge Chrysler in Tacoma because they were the only dealer that worked on Fiat’s locally. The car kept running low on oil and coolant, took it in the dealer did an oil consumption test on it and said it was down a guarter of a quart and that it passed. It was still loosing coolant and heating up. Replaced the thermostat. Still loosing coolant then the car broke down and I called the dealer again on a Saturday and left messages had no response till Monday when the service manager said there only service technician was out and didn’t know when he’d be back to work and that I should find someone else to take it to. I did took it to car smart service center in Sumner wa. A certified repair shop they diagnosed it as a blown head gasket and that it would cost $8,000 to fix then when they tore it apart the head gasket bolts were stripped another $1000 then a motor mount was broken another $1,000 when everything was done including a rental car we were in $12,000! Drove it away and a week and a half later it was having problems again. Took it back because the shop had a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty on work. They took it apart again and said it had a crack in the block and it should be replaced and not driven but they said it occurred after we drove away so they wouldn’t honor the warranty. So our car is worse off than before we took it in and out $12,0000.
So I consulted a couple of master technicians and both agreed that they didn’t do a leak drop test which would have shown a cracked block therefore misdiagnosing the original problem and doing a temporary fix. I also brought home the engine mount and found out through expert examination they broke the mount do to negligence and charged me.
    I need attorney help!
    Can anyone help me?

  5. REYNA GRIFFIN says:

I recently bought a used chrysler 300 limited, and after I got an oil change it started making ticking noise I had it looked at by a mechanic
and turned out its a rocker arm in the engine, it costing me a couple of thousand to fix.

  6. r says:

is there a way I can fill the claim if this one is already closed? I do have 2.4l and it burns oil and started to leak from the head gasket.

    1. Madeleine says:

Lol no. If a settlement is closed u cant file anymore. Also with this settlement they look up the vin number to see if your car is affected and sent u a notice.

  7. Avery says:

When will they be paying out the class action lawsuit?

  8. Tammy Barraza says:

I have a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought new off the lot in November of 2017. The transmission is completely done, the vehicle does not shift. It barely drives! I have towed it to three places for a quote and everyone is charging $7,000 for a job they don’t know when they will be able to complete because the transmission parts are not available – all back ordered and no way to tell when they will arrive. The dealer and the shops that have looked at my car say they can’t understand why a transmission is in that condition when the car is only five years old. My Jeep Cherokee definitely falls within this category. And it seems I qualify.

    1. Natalie Watkins says:

I’m just now reading about the transmission issues after researching problems that make no sense with my 217 jeep I carried it to the dealer I bought it from and to several other shops to be looked at like I was just a dumb girl describing a transmission that would sometimes stall from low to high gear around 30 mph and now I see that I have not even made it in time to be on the list to have my vehicle fixed. I didn’t drive it much to keep from making it worse because everyone made me think I was doing something wrong. The fact is something is wrong with the entire line transmission system and I hope they fix it moving forward with new cars
