Ground beef health alert overview:

  • Who: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert related to ground beef produced by Greater Omaha Packing Co.
  • Why: Ground beef that was on hold for a positive E. coli test was inadvertently used to produce the ground beef products included in the health alert.
  • Where: The ground beef health alert products were shipped across the United States.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a ground beef health alert due to potential E. coli contamination to ground beef products made by Greater Omaha Packing Co.

The ground beef health alert is for beef produced on March 28 with a “Use/Freeze by” date of April 22 and packaging date of “032824.” The E. coli ground beef has an establishment number “EST. 960A” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The facility discovered the issue while conducting inventory on ground beef that was on hold after previously testing positive for E. coli, the health alert says.

Greater Omaha Packing Co. inadvertently used some of the contaminated beef to produce ground beef products that were shipped out to be sold commercially. E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after exposure.

Throw away or return potentially contaminated products, ground beef health alert says

FSIS says it has not received any reports of illness related to the health alert so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the health alert, but Top Class Actions follows health alerts closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The ground beef health alert advises consumers and food service establishments not to consume or serve the ground beef, and to instead dispose of the products or return them to the place of purchase.

Consumers can reach Gina Adami, a representative of Greater Omaha Packing Co., at 402-575-4702 or gadami@gmail.com.

The FSIS issued a 2022 public health alert after discovering that a ground beef product produced by FBS Hudson may have been contaminated with E. coli.
