Shrimp Recall Overview:

  • Who: Avanti Frozen Foods added additional products to a recall first issued in June.
  • Why: Additional frozen shrimp products sold between May and August may be contaminated with salmonella.
  • Where: The recalled shrimp was sold nationwide.

A shrimp recall has been expanded after consumers reported salmonella-related illnesses after consuming frozen cooked, peeled, and deveined, tail-on shrimp products distributed by Avanti Frozen Foods.

Shrimp Recall Issued After Reports of Illnesses

Avanti Frozen Foods first issued the shrimp recall for frozen cooked shrimp sold nationwide in June, after six consumers reported falling ill after consuming the products. The company voluntarily expanded the recall to include products distributed nationwide between November 2020 and May 2021.

“This recall expansion has been initiated out of an abundance of precaution and will cover a large amount of product that has not been associated with any illness but been undertaken following discussions with FDA and CDC and reflects Avanti’s commitment to Public health and safety,” states the recall notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration Friday.

The frozen cooked shrimp that has been recalled was sold nationwide under a variety of brands, including Censea, Hannaford, Open acres, Honest catch, COS and others. A full list of the products affected by the expanded shrimp recall can be found on the FDA’s notice.

“Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” warns the agency.

“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”

In rare cases, salmonella infections can get into the bloodstream and arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, says the shrimp recall notice.

Consumers who purchased recalled shrimp should not eat the product and return it to the place of purchase, says the agency.
