Avanti Frozen Foods has issued a recall for frozen cooked shrimp sold nationwide after six consumers reported falling ill after consuming the products, according to a notice issued Friday.

The company says its voluntarily recalling frozen shrimp sold between December of 2020 and late February of 2021 because it may be contaminated with salmonella. The recalled shrimp includes various sizes of frozen cooked, peeled, deveined, shrimp, some of which are packaged with cocktail sauce, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notice

The frozen cooked shrimp that has been recalled was sold nationwide under a variety of brands, including Censea, Hannaford, Open acres, Honest catch, COS and others. A complete list of shrimp products subject to the recall, along with product codes and expiration dates is available on the FDA notice.

“Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” warns the agency. “Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.”

In rare cases, salmonella infections can get into the bloodstream and arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis, says the shrimp recall notice.

“The potential for contamination was identified by FDA based on its prior testing of frozen cooked shrimp imported by Avanti Frozen Foods that was found to contain Salmonella,” says the recall notice. “Avanti Frozen Foods did not distribute and destroyed that prior shipment found to be violative. The company has taken preventative steps to eliminate the potential for future contamination.”

The FDA warns consumers not to eat frozen cooked shrimp subject to the recall. The recalled products can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact Avanti Frozen Foods at +914023310260/+914023310261.
