Supermarket giant Whole Foods has recalled two types of Cahill brand cheddar cheeses in 44 stores across 22 states due to fears of listeria contamination.

The company says in the cheese recall notice that its Cahill brand cheddar with porter and whiskey cheddar cheeses had been recalled due to a distributor discovering a positive test result for Listeria monocytogenes stemming from one of the products.

No illnesses have been reported to date, Whole Foods says according to the FDA official cheese recall notice.

The cheeses sold were Cheddar with Porter, PLU 93579, and Whiskey Cheddar, PLUs 54784 and 94884.

They were sold in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, the company says.

The affected products were packaged in clear wrapping and sold in the specialty department with a Whole Foods Market scale label with “packed on” dates from May 17 – July 26, 2021.

“Customers who have purchased should not consume and should dispose of the product,” the recall notice states. Whole Foods says that customers who purchased the product at Whole Foods Market can bring a valid receipt into stores for a full refund.

The Whole Foods recall notices adds that listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant women, and others with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, and fetal infection among pregnant women.”

Customers with additional questions can call 1-844-936-8255 daily between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 a.m. CST.
