Ballreich’s Potato Chip Recall Overview:
- Who: Ohio-based Ballreich Snack Food Co. is recalling certain packages of its BAR-B-Q potato chips.
- Why: Routine testing by the chips’ seasoning provider turned up evidence of potential salmonella contamination.
- Where: The recalled chips were distributed regionally at retailers and convenience stores in Ohio and Indiana.
An Ohio snack food company is recalling packets of its potato chips due to a potential contamination with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
In a notice on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website Tuesday, Ballreich’s Snack Food Co. announced it is recalling its 1.5oz, 2.75oz, and 7oz packages of its BAR-B-Q Potato Chips.
Ballreich’s is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits
The potential contamination was discovered after routine testing done by the chips’ seasoning provider.
The company said the chips were potentially contaminated with salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
According to the FDA, healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
It said, in rare circumstances, infection with salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
No illnesses have been reported so far in connection with the contamination, the company said. However, production of the product has been suspended while the FDA and the seasoning company continues to investigate the source of the problem.
The recalled BAR-B-Q seasoned potato chips were distributed regionally at retailers and convenience stores within Ohio and Indiana.
The product is sold in 1.5oz, 2.75oz, and 7oz bags, and marked on the front of the bag with a “Sell by Date” of 10/18/21, 10/25/21 or 11/01/21.
Anyone who bought Ballreich’s BAR-B-Q chips with any of the above sell-by dates is “urged to not consume the recalled product,” the FDA said.
Customers can contact Ballreich’s Snack Food Company at 1 (800) 323-2447 or email at chips@ballreich.com for a replacement or a refund.
Potato chips are sometimes at the center of class action lawsuits. In 2020, Frito-Lay faced a class action lawsuit alleging their Cheddar & Sour Cream Baked Ruffles are misleadingly labeled.
The plaintiff says Frito-Lay’s Cheddar & Sour Cream Baked Ruffles are labeled in a way that fails to disclose the presence of artificial flavors.
