Hyundai has issued a recall of 10,984 of its 2024 Kona vehicles with 1.6T-GDI engines related to a battery cable issue that could lead to engine compartment fires.

The positive Kona 12-volt battery cable could become damaged in a frontal crash, create an electrical short and then lead to a fire, the Kona battery recall says.

The Hyundai recall affects Konas produced between June 19 and Dec. 18, 2023.

Warning signs of the Kona battery issue include smoke from the engine compartment and a burning/melting odor.

Hyundai dealers will install protective sheathing to affected wiring

Hyundai did not say if it has received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Hyundai can be reached at 800-633-5151. Dealer and owner notification is set for Feb. 23.

Vehicle owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to a dealer to install protective sheathing over the 12-volt positive (B+) and alternator wiring, which is connected to the junction block in the engine compartment.

The Hyundai battery recall will allow for owner reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the Kona recall.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that it will examine the 16 recalls of 6.4 million Hyundai and Kia vehicles in recent years due to fire hazards to determine whether the companies appropriately handled the recalls, according to Reuters.
