Carvana Vehicle Registration Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Dana Jennings and Joseph A. Furlong have filed a class action lawsuit against Carvana, LLC.
  • Why: Jennings and Furlong claim Carvana fails to register vehicles it sells in a timely manner.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.

Carvana fails to register the vehicles it sells to consumers in a timely manner, a class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Dana Jennings and Joseph A. Furlong claim Carvana breaches its contract with its customers by delaying permanently transferring the title of the cars it sells.

“As a result, consumers are often unable to legally drive the cars they purchased because they cannot timely register the car or get adequate insurance coverage,” the Carvana class action states.

Jennings claims that, instead of receiving a permanent registration for the vehicle he purchased through Carvana, as was promised and paid for, the company has instead sent him six temporary license tags.

As of November 2021, Carvana still had not provided Jennings with a permanent registration for the vehicle he purchased in December 2020, according to the Carvana class action.

Furlong, meanwhile, claims Carvana failed to provide him with a permanent registration after his first temporary license tag expired, instead sending him another temporary, which he argues the company did not have the “legal right or authorization to do.”

Carvana Class Action Alleges Company Breached Contract With Customers

Jennings and Furlong claim Carvana is guilty of breach of contract and in violation of the Pennsylvania Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act

Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting actual and treble damages for themselves and all class members.

Jennings and Furlong want to represent nationwide class and Pennsylvania subclass of consumers who entered into a contract with Carvana to purchase a vehicle that the company agreed to provide permanent car registration services for.

In other complaints involving vehicles, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda last month arguing the company knowingly sells vehicles with defective fuel pumps

I’m in the same boat as everyone here it seems. I purchased my Jeep on 02/27/2023 patiently wait for the registration and plates, told they were in the mail. 2 weeks and nothing, my temp expires so I get a new one. DMV check and see it was done but under wrong name and city. Call the company, they into it and see the mistake and tell me they will get it fixed. Temp tax expires again, DMV see no change. I get someone from management they send me paperwork to get it fixed. Temp tax expires again DMV see a title surrender in a while different state. Call again tell them to fix it asap. I then reported them to BBB, and a 1star review on autotrader. Get a notice that they now are working with my state to fix it. 07/31/2023 DMV tell me no change and no more Temps. Anyone go through a lawsuit or anything?

I bought my car in March and it is now July 20 and still no tags or Registration. I had a change of address but aside from that they can’t explain why it’s taking so long.. nor will they give a finish date!

I purchased my first Carvana car on April 26 2023 based on the experience that a friend had two separate times. The car is great, the sales process was fine but they have not done anything with my registration. I have called, texted, emailed and threatened to get an attorney and nothing is being done. I came to know about all of the previous issues AFTER I bought the car or I would not have purchased from Carvana. I do not know what my options are but I am trying to be proactive so that it is hopefully not 18 months for me like others.

I purchased a car on 4/19/23 and they sent a certified package saying that it was registered from the wrong city so they sent me a new temporary with a different purchase date. Today I received an email stating they were sending another package with LPOA that needed to be signed and notarized within 24 hours. This whole process has been a pain because I purchased the car based on the return policies and 150 point inspection. On day 2 the car wouldn’t start so day 3 I took it to one of their recommended facilities and I told the mechanic that I heard a rattling noise coming from underneath, they inspected and found 2 bad axles bad ball joints a blown shock and it needed a new battery, the warranty company refused to fix anything without their inspection company to come out to inspect. On day 7 they supposedly fixed everything. The AG needs to get involved with this company

  7. Holly says:

Took almost 18 months to get my plates, carvana refused to send me any more TOP plates stating I got the plates when I didnt. Awful company to deal with

  8. Melanie Merlino says:

The same thing is happening to me. I purchased a car to Carvana about 4 months ago and my temporary license plate is due to expire in two weeks and it looks like they’re gonna be doing the same process with me. Just sending me another temporary license plate. They told me I was yet to sign some form so they sent another form for me to sign. They said I had to get it notarized and send it back to them, and still may have not produced a registration from the DMV or any permanent license plates. I think this problem is nationwide is Carvana I also the first car I picked from them had a Lotta problems with it and could tell that they basically just put a Band-Aid over the issues. It was very easily able to tell that they did not fix any of the problems of the vehicle since they have that seven day Policía I had brought it back and got a different car that was better with the first car. The engine was rocking and rattling. I think that they are doing all kinds of back door deals where I live they recently just got busted selling stolen cars . I think this company needs to be looked into further by the federal government.

This is my 3rd car I’ve bought from Carvana. They called me last week saying that they’re having trouble registering my car due to company they’re selling for not responding to requests for the original title… What? Anyway have had car since November, temp tag expires next week 2/12. They tell me, “Yeah you can return the car and get a refund or you can find a new car within our inventory (which also means a hard pull on my credit AGAIN with the current car still on there, which makes no sense) They break this news to me while I’m in the process of buying a home and a WEEK before my temp tag expires. So frustrating!

    1. Nicole M. says:

I’m sick of Carvana!! This is my second car from them, my first car was smooth and great had tags and regs. Before temp plate expired. This car I got 10-08-22 it is now 03-13-23 still no tags or registration. I’ve done nothing but call, message, email and nothing. First I got told my title was being held in another state, then got told we’ll it takes time, then got told they needed new license and insurance because they were expiring that month as in 5months later! And then I got told my plate had a different exp date on their end as they argue with me, they say they can send me a new temp one, one wk later I call again and get told my state doesn’t allow more then one. So here I am 5months later jo plate no registration with an illegal car they still expect me to pay for. Finding my own way to take my kids to school, apportionments and work 30mins in one direction. I’m so sick of this.

  10. Richard Gordon says:

Purchased car from them on 11/30/2022. Was an out of state transaction. Temp plate was issued at time of purchase. Plate expired on 1/13/2023. They requested LPOA papers to be notarized which we had done and sent them to Carvana. After several correspondences between chat, email, phone was told that there was something wrong with the VIN inspection that was performed in December 2022. This was 2 weeks after temp plate expired. Since then had to drive back to town with expired temp plate to have another VIN inspection at police department. Sent that back to Carvana 2 days ago. Still waiting for an answer and still not able to register the car so I can legally drive it.
