Hyundai Sonata Engine Fuel Leak Recall Overview:

  • Who: Hyundai has recalled more than 215,000 model year 2013-14 Hyundai Sonata vehicles.
  • Why: The automaker initiated the recall due to continued concern that vehicles’ low-pressure fuel hoses can crack, leading to fuel leaks.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 215,000 of its model year 2013-14 Sonata vehicles due to concerns with the vehicles’ fuel systems.

The source of the concern is the vehicles’ low-pressure fuel hoses, which can crack over time due to heat the engine generates, according to Hyundai,

Hyundai issued the current recall as a follow up for one previously made to address the same issue, according to a recall notice published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on May 6.

Vehicle owners who did not receive a replacement fuel tube during the previous recall or who did not attempt to remedy the issue at that time are affected by the current recall, according to the Hyundai recall.

Hyundai Recall Says Cracked Fuel Hoses Can Lead to Engine Fire

Hyundai says the Sonata vehicles’ low-pressure fuel hose cracks can lead to fuel leaks in the engine compartment, which could then “increase the risk of an engine compartment fire while in the presence of an ignition source.”

Further, Hyundai says tape that was used as a remedy in the previous recall may not be sufficient to prevent fuel from leaking out of a damaged tube.

Hyundai says it will notify vehicle owners to bring their Sonatas into a dealer to receive a replacement fuel feed line at no cost.

In February, both Hyundai and Kia recalled nearly 485,000 vehicles over concerns they could be susceptible to engine fires.
