Carvana Vehicle Registration Class Action Lawsuit Overview:

  • Who: Dana Jennings and Joseph A. Furlong have filed a class action lawsuit against Carvana, LLC.
  • Why: Jennings and Furlong claim Carvana fails to register vehicles it sells in a timely manner.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was filed in Pennsylvania federal court.

Carvana fails to register the vehicles it sells to consumers in a timely manner, a class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiffs Dana Jennings and Joseph A. Furlong claim Carvana breaches its contract with its customers by delaying permanently transferring the title of the cars it sells.

“As a result, consumers are often unable to legally drive the cars they purchased because they cannot timely register the car or get adequate insurance coverage,” the Carvana class action states.

Jennings claims that, instead of receiving a permanent registration for the vehicle he purchased through Carvana, as was promised and paid for, the company has instead sent him six temporary license tags.

As of November 2021, Carvana still had not provided Jennings with a permanent registration for the vehicle he purchased in December 2020, according to the Carvana class action.

Furlong, meanwhile, claims Carvana failed to provide him with a permanent registration after his first temporary license tag expired, instead sending him another temporary, which he argues the company did not have the “legal right or authorization to do.”

Carvana Class Action Alleges Company Breached Contract With Customers

Jennings and Furlong claim Carvana is guilty of breach of contract and in violation of the Pennsylvania Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act

Plaintiffs are demanding a jury trial and requesting actual and treble damages for themselves and all class members.

Jennings and Furlong want to represent nationwide class and Pennsylvania subclass of consumers who entered into a contract with Carvana to purchase a vehicle that the company agreed to provide permanent car registration services for.

In other complaints involving vehicles, a consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda last month arguing the company knowingly sells vehicles with defective fuel pumps

I purchased my car June 2021., ended up going through my temporary plates, and they even sent me plate for wrong car. After that they had to “rebuild” my paperwork. Finally, October 2021 and I get my registration and plate, but no title. The SOS says no worries It is in my name and if I don’t recieve the title I can get a duplicate. Fast Forward, I found out a few days ago when I went to update my tabs/registration that Carvana transferred my title on June 15 2022 back to their name in Arizona. My car is once again illegal. Carvana has no answers as to why that happened and will not give me any kind of time frame when it will be fixed!

I live in MI and since MI revoked Carvanas license for the next 3 years, the Attorney General says they no longer have jurisdiction to help me.

  2. Bri Brown says:

It took months for me to receive my registration and plates. What’s worst is the car have so many problems and they only give you 7 days to return knowing the problems won’t start in 7 days. I’m trying to get a new car because I don’t want to deal with them any longer

  3. Shawn Byerley says:

I am a Texas Resident, I purchased from Carvana and took delivery of my car in August 2022. I have not received my registration. I have contacted them 3 times and get the same run around each time. Meanwhile my bank has raised my interest rate and converted my loan to a personal loan at higher interest. I cannot drive my car because Texas only sell one way permits to unregistered vehicles.

I purchased A 2017 Kia Rio on March 13,2022 once my 2 temporary plates were up on May 6,2022 I called them on May 6 and one of the representative told me they would just fed ex me a new temporary tag so I was okay with that … Monday May 9,2022 rolls around I still have no new temporary so I call and they tell me it is illegal to give out more then 2 temporary tags in the state of Florida … Soo I’m without a car for weeks I called everyday and finally got my tag and was able to take me vehicle to the shop because I was under the impression I still had a manufacturers warranty well that was a LIE also I got to the Kia dealership to find out from Carvana my warranty had expired but on the website and on there information it was still saying “active”. My vehicle came with bad motor mounts, some filters weren’t changed and I’m going to be taking it back now to see what else is wrong .. I just want to be added to the lawsuit .

This SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!! Now I’m stuck trying to get rid of this car

  5. Jesse Mayne says:

Literally am at a loss for words and truly am grateful to the others that have suffered, but have come together to make this law suit into something. Sincerely you have my upmost gratitude!! It’s a long and unfortunate story but I’ll attempt to make a long story short…….the amount of legal trouble I’m in, along with losing so many possessions, and the everyday used tools I’ve lost due to my tag being expired for months with no word from carvana regardless of the obscene amount of times I reached out/registration was never actually put in my name! Cars reproed, lost my job due to no means of transportation/no equipment due to it beng in my car, have fines and court dates due to their negligence of both the temp plate and registration not being valid, and the icing on the cake would have to be with no exaggeration the thousands of dollars worth of tools, personal items, etc. that were in my car and are no longer obtainable due to it being an impound lot and while I was trying to come up with money to get my car back it got repossessed so how am I supposed to get my stuff now? To carvana I hear your stock is plummeting and truly I’m happy that it is, because this was the most dreadful, unfortunate, mind boggling event that has happened to me in quite some time. I regret buying a car from you, and can’t even describe the amount of turmoil you have dropped on my life!

  6. Jose Artola says:

I was trying to purchase a car from them I gave a good deposit but the car got repoed two years in. What I find amazing and so crazy is that I went a whole two years with temporary plates it came to point where they where not wanting to give me anymore temporary plates untill I sent them the papers that I had signed the day the car got dropped off to me they would tell me can u send us the smog check paper and the odometer mileage paper , oh and they only needed it becuase they lost supposedly a lot of paperwork and not to worry I was the only one I mean it was so crazy cuz if it wasn’t one paper then was another the another the people in the don’t even know what they where talking about . But the worse part was the day my car got repoed and I am not joking or making this up that same day I recieved my plate and tags that’s so messed up I know they did to benefit them but I paid $180 for nothing and all the paper time emails man

  7. Joe says:

I want to join the lawsuit. I bough my car from them on July 2022 still waiting for a register that is not gonna come to my mailbox

    1. Betsy Baker says:

Same exact thing happened to me and their vehicles have limited warranties, but I didn’t know anything was wrong because I couldn’t legally drive my vehicle and then had to pay $2100 to have it repaired because warranty was up before most of us even received our plates.

  8. Becca says:

Bought my Carvana car in July 2022. Advertising stated the registration was included in the purchase. When it came time for dropoff the girl said that registration was included, we would just need to pick up from DMV. I got an email stating to hold tight, the registration was being processed and later an email stating that the plates were in the mail and should be arriving soon. 2 days before the temps were supposed to expired I called to check the status. It was at this time that someone told me that they do not register vehicles in Nevada. I couldn’t Even get an appointment for the DMV for two months and now have expire registration.

  9. Austin says:

I bought a car in December in 2021 and not only did they continue to tell me that they were going to register my car but even sent a confirmation email that it was done yet that was a lie. Two months later told memthey legally can not register it for me in Nevada. So they sent me a check for half of the cost of the registration and said I am SOL on the late fees they caused.

  10. Savana Sykes says:

I got my car from Carvana in August. My tags are expiring and they have sent me the wrong paperwork for the 2nd time. They are saying my car is black and it’s red. They are not willing to send me a new temp tag and mine is expiring in 5 days. I need help
