Chicago Glock pistols lawsuit overview:

  • Who: The city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock Inc.
  • Why: The city claims Glock chooses not to modify its pistols to ensure they would no longer be able to be converted into fully automatic weapons.
  • Where: The Glock lawsuit was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.

A new lawsuit filed by the city of Chicago claims gunmaker Glock Inc. knows its pistols are easily modified into fully automatic weapons but chooses not to do anything about it.

The Chicago lawsuit claims Glock is aware it takes “little effort” to convert Glock pistols into fully automatic weapons — and that criminals “frequently do so” — yet looks the other way while “putting profits over public safety and violating the law.”

“Glock’s willful decision to not take any meaningful action to address this problem in its sales to civilians — despite its awareness — is immoral, unethical, oppressive, unscrupulous, and unreasonable,” the Glock lawsuit states.

The city claims Glock is guilty of negligence, creating a public nuisance and violating the Municipal Code of Chicago and the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act

Glock pistols are ‘weapon of choice’ for Chicago criminals, city’s lawsuit says

Glock pistols are the “weapon of choice” for criminals in Chicago, according to the city’s lawsuit, which argues the guns can be “easily modified into a machine gun” if affixed with an auto sear.

The Chicago lawsuit further claims more than 1,100 modified Glock pistols were recovered by the Chicago Police Department from the beginning of 2021 through the end of 2023 and that the “terrifying weapons” have “caused death and destruction throughout Chicago.”

“Glock pistols are the most popular firearm in America. They are also the firearm most favored by criminals, particularly in Chicago,” the lawsuit says.

The city is demanding a jury trial and injunctive relief along with an award of exemplary damages and money to compensate the city and allow it to “abate the nuisance that Glock has created.”

In another case involving guns, the Supreme Court upheld a ban on so-called ghost guns last August, allowing the ban put in place by the Biden administration to remain at least until an appeals court issues a ruling.
