Auto warranty robocalls FCC order overview:
- Who: The Federal Communications Commission has ordered all of the phone companies in the U.S. to stop carrying traffic from Roy Cox Jr., Aaron Michael Jones, and their Sumco Panama companies.
- Why: The FCC says the operations run by Cox, Jones, and Sumco Panama are responsible for sending billions of scam auto warranty robocalls to consumers.
- Where: Consumers nationwide have been sent auto warranty robocalls.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) directed all phone companies in the U.S. last week to stop carrying traffic from certain individuals and companies the agency says have been spamming consumers with scam auto warranty robocalls.
The order was issued on July 21 and came from the FCC’s Robocall Response Team, Law360 reports.
The FCC previously issued a cease-and-desist order to a group of smaller carriers it claimed were sending robocalls originating from Sumco Panama companies owned by Roy Cox Jr. and Aaron Michael Jones — in addition to their international associates.
Within its order the FCC also gave wireless carriers the green light to eliminate carrying traffic from Cox, Jones and Sumco Panama without having to worry about being in violation of federal carriage requirements, Law360 reported.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has accused Cox, Jones, and Sumco Panama of being responsible for sending consumers billions of unwanted and fraudulent auto warranty robocalls.
“We are not going to tolerate robocall scammers or those that help make their scams possible. Consumers are out of patience and I’m right there with them,” Rosenworcel said in a statement.
FCC demands wireless carriers find way to put an end to auto warranty robocalls
The enforcement bureau of the FCC demanded wireless carriers also do whatever it takes to avoid carrying traffic from Cox, Jones and Sumco Panama in the wake of them being warned about the problem July 7.
Wireless carriers were previously only given an authorization by the FCC to stop carrying traffic originating from the auto warranty robocall operators, whereas now they have officially been ordered to do so, Law360 reports.
“Now that U.S. voice service providers know the individuals and entities associated with this scheme, the Enforcement Bureau will closely monitor voice service providers’ compliance with this order and take appropriate enforcement action as necessary,” acting FCC chief Loyaan Egal said in a statement.
The FCC warned consumers earlier this month to watch out for scam auto warranty calls coming from individuals falsely claiming to be representatives of a car dealer, insurer or manufacturer.
