Default Microsoft Settings Data Exposure Overview

  • Who: Power Apps, built by Microsoft, reportedly exposed personal information of 38 million users.
  • Why: Power Apps default settings allowed any collected data to become publicly available.
  • Where: Microsoft is based in Washington, but the exposure may affect users nationwide.

A default privacy setting on Microsoft’s Power Apps rendered any data collected on its platform, including users’ Social Security numbers, accessible to the public.

Microsoft has since fixed the issue after the data breach was reported in May, but the problem highlights ongoing cybersecurity problems, according to experts who talked to Law360

How Default Microsoft Settings Exposed Millions

Power Apps is a platform built by Microsoft that allows companies and individuals to build websites without heavy coding. The platform includes a data collection tool that allows users to each site to input their personal data.

However, the previous default privacy settings allowed any data entered into this tool to become publicly accessible.

The faulty privacy setting was discovered by security research team UpGuard in May 2021, reports Law360.

Government agencies in Indiana, Maryland, and New York used Power Apps to to collect data, likely for COVID-19 testing purposes, according to Law360. Many private companies also collected data through Power Apps, including American Airlines, J.B. Hunt, and even Microsoft itself.

A class action lawsuit has not been filed regarding the Microsoft data exposure. Class action lawsuits have been filed for similar data breaches, however.
