Verizon Wireless Reaches $10M Class Action Settlement Over Fees

By Matt O’Donnell

Verizon WirelessVerizon Wireless has reached a $10 million class action lawsuit settlement over allegations it violated California law by charging consumers fixed fees for late charges and reconnections, regardless of how much their plans cost.

According to the Verizon Wireless class action lawsuit, Verizon customers were charged a fixed $5 late fee if they did not pay their bills on time and a $15 reconnect fee to begin service again. These fees were allegedly the same regardless of the monthly cost of the plan. The class action lawsuit alleges that California consumer protection laws make such flat fees illegal.

Under the proposed $10 million class action lawsuit settlement, Verizon has agreed to distribute funds to individuals who paid a $5 late fee between June 12, 2003 and July 20, 2012, or a $15 reconnect fee between December 1, 2004 and April 26, 2012.

I called verizon later in august 2013 and told them to cancel my service september 9th 2013 and was told by them that the phone was no longer in service after that day. So when i got to korea i noticed that i was able to make phone calls through video chat as along as i was able to be in an active connection. I thought that It was free because i was using wifi. I used the video chat for about a month so i could see my wife and kids. So yesterday i Logged into my account and found out that I have a $3725.48 charge to my account. I called them to see why there is 3725.48 charged to my account, they told me its because i was using my phone. Does anyone think this is wrong for verizon to be charging me so much?

I understand that Verizon’s appeal was denied. It has been months since the ruling and I haven’t heard anything since. The last newsletter stated $21M not $10M. Has anyone else? Calling them is turning out to be a joke. Their not even responding to emails anymore. I’m sure the lawyers have received their payments. So, was this just a scam?

  8. Angel says:

HEY! WHEN IS THE CHECKS COMING.

Verizon is a rip off. I was a loyal customer for about ten years until I said enough is enough. I received an outrageous bill an their explanation was “I didn’t have a text message plan”. After talking with customer service who gave me the run around I said the hell with it an switched providers.
