Verizon Wireless Reaches $10M Class Action Settlement Over Fees

By Matt O’Donnell

Verizon WirelessVerizon Wireless has reached a $10 million class action lawsuit settlement over allegations it violated California law by charging consumers fixed fees for late charges and reconnections, regardless of how much their plans cost.

According to the Verizon Wireless class action lawsuit, Verizon customers were charged a fixed $5 late fee if they did not pay their bills on time and a $15 reconnect fee to begin service again. These fees were allegedly the same regardless of the monthly cost of the plan. The class action lawsuit alleges that California consumer protection laws make such flat fees illegal.

Under the proposed $10 million class action lawsuit settlement, Verizon has agreed to distribute funds to individuals who paid a $5 late fee between June 12, 2003 and July 20, 2012, or a $15 reconnect fee between December 1, 2004 and April 26, 2012.

Keep checking Top Class Actions for details on how to file a claim for the Verizon Wireless Fee Class Action Settlement as soon as the Settlement Administrator website is up.

In the meantime, you can read the class action lawsuit settlement agreement, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on May 25, at www.hbsslaw.com/verizon-wireless.

The case is Joseph Ruwe, et al. v. Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, San Francisco Division.

I have try to get the $5.00 dollars late fee resolve. but verizon just doesn’t care. I glad there is a claim against
    them,it’s about time !!!!

I’m waiting for the next one that targets false fees invoiced when you close your account with them to elect another service provider.

I called Verizon to “manage timing” of the close of my account to return to Comcast and gained the date needed.

Then I received a bill (after I was current at the time of closing the account)

I called Verizon and they said, oh…we’ll credit you

    I then received a check for 147.00

AFTER…they started billing me 114.00 for my phone bill advising oh, the phone fee wasn’t included and that date was different than ISP/Cable. Bunch of nonsense because I ordered all 3 services to be turned on and paid ongoing as a bundle package.

That began mid February and just recently….after “several calls and collection agencies” that my invoice was reduced to “0”

The are dirty scammers when it comes to closing your account and they did the same with my cell phone when I closed the account to move to T-Mobile. That was how I learned of their dirty tactics so I made it a point to fight the fees when I changed to Comcast

Amazing…they are making money hand over fist on their so called fees based on noting but complex nonsense.

Soon…you will see another class action lawsuit over their fees when you cancel their cable, ISP & phone services when organizing under the bundle package and I can’t wait!

We cancelled Verizon and got another company. My husband paid off an early discontinue fee. We were done.
Now are getting called from a collection agency for over $300.00. They asked the last 4 SS numbers and the ones they have are not ours but they will not give US any information. We continue to get collection calls. What do we do?

In May I open an a line for my computer then I have threeday for trial and canceled if it doesn’t work out. Then I
return Item. But two month later I recieved a late billed that charge to my account one hundreds ninety two for the item that I have return in three days trials. They make me dispute it over the last couple years.

Verizon not only charges a late fee of 5$ every month before the dates of the service begins, they have told me that they don’t care if Fed-ex has a signature from Verizon for a phone I returned – they are charging me $350.00 for it, and told me if I dont pay I will be disconnected…and if I dont like it I can sue them, they don’t care. and if I go to or call the local verizon store they will just disconnect my service, which they did. I tried to get them to file a R.O., so that I could at least get them in front of a judge, but they won’t bite. any suggestions?

    1. Judy says:

I don’t have a reply but do have a very similar situation and am receiving at least 5 calls per day to try to get me to pay up to Verizon Wireless for disconnection and early termination fees when Verizon Wireless caused the problems in the first place.

This has been going on since May 2013 and I need some answers to get this proverbial monkey off my back. Please help. I will go into complete detail if asked. Thank you.

I am glad people are doing something about this now! My husband and I switched from Verizon to another company and our final bill (including discontinue fee for two phones, data overages, etc.) was about $1,100. As you can imagine, we were furious!!
