Verizon Wireless Reaches $10M Class Action Settlement Over Fees

By Matt O’Donnell

Verizon WirelessVerizon Wireless has reached a $10 million class action lawsuit settlement over allegations it violated California law by charging consumers fixed fees for late charges and reconnections, regardless of how much their plans cost.

According to the Verizon Wireless class action lawsuit, Verizon customers were charged a fixed $5 late fee if they did not pay their bills on time and a $15 reconnect fee to begin service again. These fees were allegedly the same regardless of the monthly cost of the plan. The class action lawsuit alleges that California consumer protection laws make such flat fees illegal.

Under the proposed $10 million class action lawsuit settlement, Verizon has agreed to distribute funds to individuals who paid a $5 late fee between June 12, 2003 and July 20, 2012, or a $15 reconnect fee between December 1, 2004 and April 26, 2012.

This just happened to us as well. I forgot to pay our bill, 2 days later I noticed our internet stopped working on our phones. I immediately paid it. They charged us $5 plus $20 per line…21.99 for my phone which is the oldest, for a total of $127 reconnect fee. Our bill is now $600, normally in the $400 range. I’m done with Verizon.

I agree that Verizon is a huge rip off. At one time I thought that they were the best until I bought a new laptop and had an internet plan with them. I started getting charges on the internet that I did not do. I was never told how to lock the broad band or what ever it is called and then some one started using my internet. I was charged for someone else downloading videos and movies that I had no idea of. Only my husband and I had access to the internet from our laptop. we never had anyone else using it. Next thing we knew my bill started going up and up. Finally I had a bill of over $1,000 which is refused to pay especially when my monthly bill was never over 60. They started adding all kinds of fees to my account that I cannot and will not pay.

I was overcharged by Verizon for years! I would like to be included in the lawsuit also.

My Issue is I received a Verizon router to replace a defective one. Returned the new one as my original router was fine. Shipped back to Verizon via UPS, have documentation and Tracking Info. Verizon has been denying that they received the returned router even though UPS shows that it was shipped back to Verizon. This all started back in September 2014. Have tried several times to resolve this with Verizon Reps with no satisfaction. They just do not care, they just want to charge me anyway. VERIZON SUCKS.

What do you do when this problem is still happening? Please help!!

  6. Ron Boles says:

Recently, while residing in the State of Maryland (came to this state, by way of Texas), I received notice of the bill on a Family Plan. The amount stated on the invoice is $400.00. Typically, $100.00-$120.00 is charged to the account. Albeit, I was charged a significant amount of that bill because of calls made to a number out of Minnesota. However, the number that I was calling is to someone that resides in the state of Maryland (just like myself), but the person lives 30 minutes away with a Minnesota area code. I will be pulling cell phone and cell tower records in effort to vindicate myself from this incredible disposition. Its impossible, and moreover implausible to suggest that I pay a fee for a service that I live in for that amount….I’m open to suggestions while I take this matter up with the appropriate division of the FCC.

    Problem cell phone companies:
Verizon – the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing… sometimes evil
    Sprint – Pure Evil
    T-Mobile – Evil squared

  8. Penny says:

My phone bill seems to go up every month. I always pay on time and feel I’m getting ripped. I was grand fathered into data but if I upgrade I loose it.. I don’t understand. There customer service is the worst. Once in awhile I get someone pleasant. U can talk to 3 different persons and get 3 different answers about the same question. The only reason I stay is they’re service. I’ve had good luck with prepaid in the past and may just go back to it. Unsure. Not happy customer.

  9. Chris says:

    Hi,

I’m interested in knowing if Verizon is still allow to collect late fee charges in California after this settlement? Apparently, Verizon still charges late fee in California.

    Thanks,
    Chris
