P&G Deodorant Sprays Benzene Class Action Lawsuits Overview:
- Who: Lynn Balser Mills and Angela Hernandez filed separate class action lawsuits against The Procter & Gamble Company.
- Why: Mills and Hernandez join a number of class action lawsuits filed over the alleged presence of the chemical benzene, a known human carcinogen, in deodorant and antiperspirant sprays, among other products.
- Where: The class action lawsuits were filed in Ohio and South Carolina federal courts.
Procter & Gamble manufactured and sold spray antiperspirant and deodorant products containing the chemical benzene, a known human carcinogen, a pair of new class action lawsuits allege.
Plaintiffs Lynn Balser Mills and Angelez Hernandez filed separate class action lawsuits against P&G with both claiming the company falsely represents that its Old Spice- and Secret-branded antiperspirant and deodorant spray products are safe and effective for consumers.
Mills and Hernandez claim the presence of benzene in the antiperspirant and deodorant sprays makes the products “defective” and offers no therapeutic benefit.
Instead, exposure to benzene can lead to a number of chronic health conditions, including blood cancers such as leukemia, according to the class action lawsuits.
The presence of benzene came to light following the release of a study done by Valisure, an independent analytical pharmacy, in May of last year, which revealed that a number of healthcare and cosmetic products contained traces of benzene.
Valisure would later file a citizens petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November, imploring the agency to recall the products found to contain benzene, which included the aforementioned P&G antiperspirant and deodorant sprays, according to the class action lawsuits.
Benzene Presence Makes Products ‘Worthless,’ ‘Unmerchantable,’ ‘Unfit For Use,” Plaintiffs Claim
Hernandez and Mills claim that, in addition to making the products dangerous, the presence of benzene renders them “worthless,” “unmerchantable,” and “unfit for use.”
Further, had they known about the presence of benzene, both Mills and Hernandez argue they would not have purchased the products.
“Indeed, no reasonable consumer, including Plaintiff, would have purchased the Products had they known of the material omissions of material facts regarding the presence of Benzene,” the class action lawsuits state.
Hernandez and Mills both claim P&G is in violation of the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. They are both demanding a jury trial and requesting relief in the form of compensatory, statutory, and punitive damages for themselves and all class members.
Mills wants to represent a nationwide class of consumers who purchased P&G spray deodorants or antiperspirants contaminated with benzene, while Hernandez wants to represent a nationwide Class and South Carolina subclass.
A separate class action lawsuit was filed against P&G last November by a consumer also claiming the company sold Old Spice brand antiperspirant sprays containing benzene.
A number of class action lawsuits have been filed against various companies in the wake of the Valisure report, including Unilever, Walmart and Thriving Brands LLC, among others.

Still suffering, it’s going on a month now and my armpit is still itching. I use aloe cream and it helps for about an hour, then the itching returns. I’m very concern.
Is anyone else having such sever reaction. My mistake was I kept on using it while my armpit began to itch because I kept on forgetting to replace the deodorant at the market. I bought it from Walmart, if the product was recalled in 2021, why was I still able to purchase it in 2022?
