Suave Antiperspirant Spray Products Contain High Levels of Cancer-causing Chemical Benzene, New Class Action Lawsuit Claims

Suave antiperspirant aerosol and spray products contain dangerously high levels of benzene, a cancer-causing impurity that has been linked to leukemia and other cancers, according to a new class action lawsuit. 

“The products are not designed to contain benzene, and, in fact, no amount of benzene is acceptable in antiperspirant sprays,” the lawsuit states. “The presence of benzene in the products renders them adulterated and misbranded and therefore illegal to sell under both federal and state law.”

The lawsuit claims that on Nov. 3, Online Pharmacy Valisure “detected high levels of benzene and other contaminants in specific batches of body spray products, some of which contain active pharmaceutical ingredients aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum sesquichlorohydrate.” Valisure tested the products manufactured by the defendant, which were found to contain as much as 5.21 parts per million of benzene.

However, the defendant does not disclose the actual or potential presence of benzene in its antiperspirant products on the products’ labeling, in any advertising or website promoting the products or at the point of sale, the lawsuit states.

Plaintiff requests, individually and on behalf of the alleged classes, compensatory, statutory and punitive damages in amounts to be determined by the court and/or jury; prejudgment interest; an order of restitution and all other forms of equitable monetary relief; injunctive relief as pleaded or as the Court may deem proper; and attorneys’ fees and expenses.

Suave Joins Axe, Old Spice, Secret, and Dove on Growing List of Companies Facing Class Action Lawsuits Over Benzene Contamination in Spray Deodorants 

This isn’t the first time a major company has faced legal action over benzene contamination. Benzene has been discovered by independent labs in various sprays, including sunscreen products manufactured by Neutrogena, Banana Boat, Aveeno, Old Spice, Axe, Dove and other major brands of antiperspirants, as well as antifungal sprays made by Bayer. 

Proctor & Gamble also recently faced a lawsuit over benzene contamination in its antiperspirants. Multiple sanitizer products also remain under the microscope for benzene contamination following an investigation by Valisure. And earlier this month, consumers from several states reached a settlement with Costco and Johnson & Johnson over their sunscreens.
